Motor Boat & Yachting July 2021

Published by TI Media Limited Motor Boat & Yachting is Europe's best motor boating magazine. It's also the oldest, with a history dating back to 1904. Our long experience makes our boat tests the most authoritative in the business and means our technical coverage is without equal. Each month we cover the best new boats on the market, cruising areas that are both practical and inspirational, and the latest boating developments and training. Core editorial focuses on boats up to 80ft, but we also venture beyond the 80ft barrier in our monthly Custom Yachting pages.

Given that I live near Southampton, have a boat based in Poole and the vast majority of our tests take place somewhere between Portsmouth and Plymouth, it’s no surprise that I have a somewhat limited opportunity to see what happens beyond the South Coast’s boating hotspots. So what a joy it was to spend a couple of days in North Wales, testing a pair of very special new craft from Ideal Boat in Pwllheli. It helped that we were bathed in late April sunshine from the minute we arrived to the minute we left, and it’s hard not to have fun when presented with two open sportsboats packing a combined 1,000hp, but seriously, what a superb place it is for going boating. With the mountains of Snowdonia as a backdrop,…

the 10 key boating stories you need to read

1 EXCLUSIVE: THE NEXT BIG FINN New start-up, Compact Mega Yachts, has released renderings of two revolutionary new motor boats. The CMY161 and CMY173 measure 53ft and 57ft respectively and feature striking angular styling, with an unusual raised pilothouse design. But it’s what’s hiding under the transom locker that differentiates them from every other competitor on the market – triple 300hp diesel outboard engines. There are several claimed benefits to the use of diesel outboards when applied to designs of this size. For a start there is no conventional engineroom space, which not only makes the boats cheaper and quicker to build, but also means there’s more usable space for lower-deck accommodation. Plus diesel outboards are much more efficient than petrol ones when operating under the high loading conditions of a big,…

We’re back, baby, yeah! It has felt like the longest winter on record, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, being kept under house arrest in the first summer lockdown, whilst frustrating, was at least mollified (for those of us lucky enough to have them) by being able to sit out in the garden in the sunshine. In winter it turned a bleak period into an interminable one. Without the usual off season punctuations of a weekend or two away, maybe even a trip or two abroad for a little off-season warmth (Miami in February and a rental Ferrari California is quite the pick up), the days and weeks stretched out for an eternity. And making it worse was an incredibly slow and frustrating house purchase. I spent most of my…

SHELL BAY RESTAURANT AND BISTRO POOLE HARBOUR Boat owners who frequently visit the Solent will almost certainly have heard of The Hut on the Isle of Wight. It has become the restaurant destination of choice for anybody with access to a boat. It’s got a great vibe, it serves good local seafood and its massive bottles of chilled Rosé have taken on an almost mythical status. But arguably the main reason it has done so well is because of the experience it offers; you can arrive in your own boat, drop anchor, get picked up by one of The Hut’s tenders and eat your meal while enjoying the best view in the world (i.e. your own boat at anchor). However, after the dinner I’ve just had at Shell Bay Restaurant and Bistro in…

UK OR EU VAT I hope you can give me some advice on a complex post-Brexit subject. I am buying a new boat in the UK and it will arrive in a month. I intend to have it immediately transported to Spain, where it will stay. The big question is about the VAT. I’m told that if I pay UK VAT it will not suffice when I take it to Europe and that I may have to pay VAT again. Should I not pay VAT in the UK and pay Spanish IVA instead? If so how do I do this? I have a Spanish NIE number. Mark Tree Good question and one which I enlisted the help of broker Boats.co.uk to answer: “If he intends to keep the boat in Spain for…
