van alfen honored with burnett anderson memorial award

On Jan. 16, the economic historian and author, Peter van Alfen, received The Burnett Anderson Memorial Award for Excellence in Numismatic Writing. Presentation of the award took place at the American Numismatic Society’s Annual Gala Dinner, held at the Harvard Club in New York City. The Burnett Anderson Memorial Award for Excellence in Numismatic Writing is presented annually to a researcher, author, or journalist in recognition of his or her body of work and career contributions in numismatics. First conferred posthumously to its namesake in 1999, at the American Numismatic Association’s (ANA) 108th Anniversary convention, the award is intended to recognize quality and integrity in numismatic wordsmithing of every kind. A scholar with wide-ranging interests, van Alfen’s research includes ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern monetary, fiscal, and trade systems spanning the late…

Missing Lincoln I have found a 1980-D cent with no Lincoln in the Memorial. I went over the coin to see if it had been there at any time. The coin is about MS-63. I’m wondering if it is a genuine or a fake. Also, is there any value to it? Charles Jochim Address Withheld 10 Questions for the Mint 1. Bullion coins such as silver eagles (sans a mint mark) which are only offered in bulk which are, I believe, purchased by the Mint to deep pocketed entities, how does that square with the Mint’s claim of “Fair and Equal Access” to the American public for their products? 2. Given the Mint’s Fiasco release of the 2019-S Enhanced Reverse Proof silver eagle for $ 65.00, and that they were immediately being sold for a…

fight for circulation of peratrovich coin continues

In January 2019, the Fairbanks Coin Club contacted the members of the Alaska State Legislature promoting the release of the Elizabeth Peratrovich dollar coin to circulation in Alaska. In the spring, local 4H leaders traveled to Juneau with a group as part of the 4H Youth in Government program. They lobbied all 60 legislators for a resolution calling for the release of the Peratrovich dollar into circulation in Alaska. They also met with Paulette Mareno, Grand President of the Alaska Native Sisterhood, who has been involved with the mint since the beginning of the planning for the Peratrovich dollar, according to the Fairbanks Coin Club. The results of the lobbying is HJR9, an act calling for the release of 5 million of the coins into circulation in Alaska. This was passed by…

rethinking coin designs

by Bill Tuttle While on YouTube, I came across a channel whose author talked about his “Ten least favorite coin designs” and made some suggestions for better designs (in his opinion). That got me rethinking about what I’ve written in the past about changing the coin and currency of our money. The Union Shield cent was one of the ugliest coins listed. Even though the author of the video suggested another design which would be better, I think the denomination should be eliminated totally. The Canadians and other “industrial” nations of the world have, because the lowest denomination coin has little or no “purchasing power” like it had years ago. The cent should be relegated to cyber space like the mil ($0.001). Jefferson’s nickels should be made slightly smaller, and have a different…
