retrieve

Here is Tom Syke’s dog Goose retrieving a pigeon from the standing crop. In this feature, one of Tom’s fields is declared a “no shooting zone” due to nearby rearing partridges and it soon becomes covered in birds. However, the partridges were crated off as the crop was ready to be cut, and the boss gave Tom the green light to get out with his gun and shift the crow and pigeon populations damaging the crop. many of you will be saddened to hear that mike george has died.

He contributed to Sporting Gun from the beginning and it is a testament to his professionalism that despite facing serious illness he managed to get his copy in on time and word-perfect.Mike was what I call a real journalist. He was a reporter in Southern Rhodesia during the turbulent change of regime from 1961-63 and was founding editor of two magazines, Sporting Gun and Target Gun. He also authored two successful technical books — Metalworking: a Manual of Techniques (1987) and The Shotgun Handbook (1998), both published by Crowood Press.Mike’s knowledge of guns was unsurpassed and his clear and entertaining way of explaining technical terms made him a firm favourite with the readers of this magazine.Earlier this year, and despite his illness, Mike rescued an elderly neighbour from a…

the eight-week extension

One of the provisions introduced in the Policing and Crime Act 2017 (PCA), but not immediately implemented, was an automatic eight-week extension of certificate life provided a fully completed renewal application was received at least eight weeks before expiry and the certificate was not renewed on time. It was intended to prevent certificate holders from inadvertently being in unlawful possession as the result of police inefficiency. Some forces regard it as an unnecessary addition to an already burdensome bureaucracy. It is certainly true that if all forces were providing a decent service the measure would not be needed. “The biggest problem is that certificate holders don’t complain if they get poor service” What you should do The force website and the renewal reminder letter should…
