potluck summer

Enjoy it! I DON’T KNOW about you but my summer got off to a sizzling start! It was so hot on May 30th that I jumped into the lake. I immediately wished I hadn’t — the water was freezing! But the early heat has been great for the garden and I’ve been picking fresh lettuces every day since that early dip. Bring on summer! My peas and beans are climbing up their tripods. Brilliant red strawberries and pink radishes were already piled high in Ottawa’s Byward Market when I visited there in June. This year marks the fifteenth anniversary of Food Day Canada, the initiative launched by University of Guelph Food Laureate Anita Stewart in 2003, when Canadian beef producers were suffering an export ban. Anita urged us to support our food…

lompoc, ca

DESTINATION: LOMPOC, CA DATE OF TRAVEL: April 2018 WEATHER: 15ºC, a mix of April showers and sunshine TRAVELLER: Jessica Kobel COUNTRY: USA Glamour in the Ghetto Around 1998, a nearly empty industrial park began its transformation into a wine lovers’ playground. Rick Longoria, whose wines are now internationally acclaimed, thought the simple buildings would provide the perfect starter home for his fledgling winery. Other likeminded producers such as Palmina and Fiddlehead Cellars followed. While Longoria has a stand-alone tasting room on Lompoc’s west side and Palmina took over another building nearby, Fiddlehead Cellars and 19 other wineries in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto continue to introduce wine drinkers to the future of Santa Barbara County wines. www.lompocwine.net MAKING IT FROM SCRATCH Augusto Caudillo, a Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts alumnus, converted a former diner into the fresh, artsy…
