CONSERVATION What about the world around us? Just how much of our planet do we need to preserve to ensure animals can continue to exist alongside humans? CLIMATE CHANGE IS GETTING SOME SERIOUS HEAT within the media and no matter what your stance may be, it’s getting harder to deny that when environmental issues hit, animals are regularly impacted. This year has seen some huge environmental disasters, from Japan’s typhoon to the Amazon fires. Closer to home, we’ve seen the effects of the Queensland fires as well as droughts across Australia. Images of animals being given water or shelter in these critical times fill the internet, although many are feeling it’s not enough. One such person is famed biologist E.O. RSPCA APPROVED FARMING SCHEME LAUNCHED 22 YEARS AGO It’s been over 22 years since the RSPCA Approved Farming Scheme was launched in 1996. In that time, we’ve seen an enormous amount of change within the agriculture industry when it comes to animal welfare and consumer expectations. We’re proud to have improved the lives of turkeys, pigs, meat chickens, layer hens and farmed Atlantic salmon through our Approved Farming Scheme Standards. Since the Scheme’s launch, over two billion farm animals have benefitted from improved conditions on RSPCA Approved farms. In our recently launched 2018 Impact Report, we share some of the amazing outcomes for animals that have occurred under the Scheme. Find the Impact Report online to read more about how we’re working to improve farm animal welfare: rspcaapproved.org.au/impact-2019 GIVE TO GET THEM HOME On Thursday October…

Sassy was approximately two years old and did not have up to date microchip details, and had appeared to be confined in a cage with a small bowl of water. Despite her circumstances, Sassy was still a smiley, happy-natured dog. Her tail wagged eagerly when she held someone’s attention, something that had caused it to suffer wounds from wagging and knocking against the small cage walls. Sassy was brought to the shelter, where she waited patiently for four months while her Inspectorate case was resolved. She was wormed, vaccinated and desexed. Finally, Sassy was ready for adoption and eager to find…

With a predicted hot and humid summer around the corner, all pets, irrespective of fur, feathers or scales are susceptible to the effects of heat. Here are some tips to keep your pets comfortable and safe this summer. Top ten tips to staying cool this summer 1. Recognise the signs of heat stress and act fast to save your pet’s life! Excessive panting, restlessness, vomiting and ‘brick red’ gums are common signs. 2. Provide plenty of cool, fresh water in multiple plastic or terracotta bowls/buckets, add ice blocks and take cold water and a bowl with you on outings. 3. Leave fans or the air-conditioner on all day (or during the hottest times of the day). 4. Avoid all exercise during the heat of the day, leaving this to the very early morning or if cool…

FAST FACTS Full name: Melinda Claire Buttle Birthday: 25 January 1982 Hometown: Samford, QLD Pets: Dog Ruby FOR COMEDIAN MEL, HER LOVE OF ANIMALS RUNS IN THE FAMILY. “My dad is very into animals, we’d always be dropping an injured bird off to a wildlife carer or helping a python across the road. I guess I get my fondness for animals from him.” Mel explains why she jumped on board as an RSPCA Ambassador. “I think it’s important to give back somehow and to also snuggle poochies, so as the girl on the taco ad says, why can’t it be both! Also, if I can put my twitter followers to good use and get the word out about the work of the RSPCA.” “I’d only ever seen the frontline dog and cat adoption stuff, but since signing…
