Aida band is such a versatile material, and so fun and easy to use. We often see it made up into bookmarks or stitched onto towels, but this month we’re trying something a bit different with these gorgeous ribbons – perfect for adding real festive flair to your Christmas wrapping. Designed for skinny aida bands with decorative edges, Lucie’s pretty patterns are worked in Christmassy colours that look stunning against plain backgrounds. We’ve used them to decorate boxes and tie up fabric bags filled with treats – if you love baking and stitching then this is a great way to combine your interests and make a lovely homemade gift. If there’s a perfect setting in which to spend the holiday season, then Carol Thornton’s idyllic winter village is surely it. The village represents all that’s best about Christmas: snow-covered roof tops, golden light shining out from cosy cottages, an enormous Christmas tree bedecked in dazzling array of decorations and a warm and welcoming pub where you can savour a glass or two of festive cheer. These colourful designs would make a wonderful gift for someone who lives in a village, or for a city dweller who dreams of escaping the hustle and bustle of urban life at Christmas time. let it snow!

When they’re placed together like this, simple motifs such as snowflakes can create a stunning look. For the designer, Lesley, arranging the snowflakes was the most enjoyable part of the design process, as it involved a lot of thought and experimentation to get them just so. Of course, you can pick out your favourite individual motifs and stitch them separately to use on cards, gift tags, decorations and mini pictures, making this an extremely versatile design – always good news for the savvy stitcher. If you do decide to stitch the entire design and turn it into a cushion, finish it off with white, snowball-effect pompom edging like we have.
