Browser extensions, or add-ons, are tiny programs that add new functions to your browser. They’re almost always free, and can be added to your installed browser with one click. For example, the free, open-source extension Adblock Plus (https://adblockplus.org) blocks banner adverts, pop-ups and even YouTube video ads, and can be installed with one click in Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer (IE) and other browsers.
Most extensions are useful, but they have their downsides. Some (including Adblock Plus) use a lot of memory and slow your browser down, especially if you’re using an old PC. Certain websites are even counter-blocking users of advertblockers, because adverts pay the money that keeps these sites alive.
