shaping the future

THE ASTON MARTIN design studio is one of my favourite places: light, airy and buzzing with creative energy. stepping through the doors and into this highly secretive area is akin to time travel, for it’s here that Aston Martin’s future is literally taking shape. I’m fortunate to have visited the studio many times over the years. Beyond the novelty of seeing things that i can’t breathe a word to anyone about, I’ve come to view the level and intensity of activity in the design studio as a barometer of the company’s health and aspirations. There were times, not so very long ago, when only a few ‘clays’ appeared to be in progress. none, it has to be said, looking so different from what was already in the public domain. recently, though, the…

lagonda’s electric shock

SO THIS IS ASTON MARTIN’S PLAN for Lagonda. Remarkable, isn’t it? Like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It certainly knocked me for six when i had a sneak peek at the full-size styling ‘clay’ and a very basic interior buck in the Aston Martin Design studio at Gaydon a few weeks before the Vision Concept’s unveiling at the Geneva motor show. AMl’s ambition and intent for Lagonda is as breathtaking as the concept itself. Production of the first in a range of new Lagondas is due to start in 2021, though whether the first model will be a productionised version of the Vision Concept or something a little more conventional is unclear at this stage. What’s very clear is the aim of Lagonda being the first zero-emission luxury brand. As you’d expect,…

finding new angles

1976 ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA It looked like a concept, but the William Towns-designed saloon that stunned London motor show crowds in 1976 was a real car and you could buy one (if your pockets were deep enough). Middle Eastern buyers loved it and, remarkably, it stayed in production until 1990. 1993 LAGONDA VIGNALE After the demise of the ‘wedge’, AML owner Ford moved to relaunch Lagonda with this baroque leviathan, styled by Moray Callum. by a wonderful coincidence, brother Ian was working on the DB7 at the same time, and bosses decided the Aston was the better prospect. 2009 LAGONDA CONCEPT LUV That’s LUV for luxury utility vehicle. Timed to coincide with the 100th birthday of the Lagonda marque, and aimed at emerging markets in China and Russia, the Marek Reichman-penned luxury 4x4 was not…

valkyrie amr pro breaks cover

LITERALLY MOMENTS BEFORE this edition of Vantage was dispatched to the printers, we received word from Aston Martin that it would be revealing a full-size mock-up of the Valkyrie AMR Pro on its Geneva show stand: one of two surprise unveilings, the other being the incredible Lagonda Vision Concept. News of the ultra-Valkyrie’s show debut was accompanied by the design rendering you can see above. We’ll be honest, there’s little more detail to add since we ran our first news story on the track-only evolution of the Valkyrie hypercar in the last issue. Nevertheless we felt the image was well worth sharing, for it confirms that despite the extreme nature of the road car, Adrian Newey has created something truly sensational in the AMR version. To recap, the AMR Pro is lighter…

in brief

ROLLING ROAD DAY Ever wondered how much horsepower your Aston actually makes? A rolling road day specifically for Newport Pagnell-built Vanquishes has been organised at Surrey Rolling Road Ltd in Farnborough for Saturday May 12 in conjunction with the local area of the AMOC. At time of going to press there were still a couple of places left – if you have a mk1 Vanquish and would like to take part, contact organiser Mark Heyes by emailing mark.heyes@thecleargroup.com BONHAMS SALE SWITCH After a run of 18 years, the Bonhams Aston Martin Sale will this year move from Newport Pagnell to Englefield House in Berkshire as part of the AMOC Concours weekend on June 2. aston’s big f1 adventure

ASTON MARTIN DOESN’T exactly have a glittering track record in Formula 1, but it does have great ambitions at the highest level of motorsport. And those ambitions are slowly taking tangible form in the shape of an ever-closer partnership with Red Bull Racing. A technical partnership between the two is already bearing fruit in the form of the Valkyrie hypercar. And, for 2018, Aston Martin has become the title sponsor of the Red Bull F1 team. But in future years it may be far more than just the Aston name that features on the grid. Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer has gone on record as saying that Aston will ‘probably’ enter F1 as an engine supplier in 2021 – if proposals to reduce costs are adopted by the sport’s governing body. The plans…
