What does USA Cycling do, exactly? You may have asked yourself this when considering purchasing a USA Cycling membership. Or maybe it was, “What value does USA Cycling provide for my membership fee?” Or, “Why do I even have to pay USA Cycling to race my bike?” I’ve certainly heard such questions many times since I began as CEO last summer. Before last July, Simon Geschke (Giant-Alpecin) was better known for his voluminous beard than his exploits on the bike. A six-year veteran at the time with only two wins to his name, the 30-year-old German saw everything change when he took an emotional breakaway mountain stage victory at the Tour de France. For once, he was in the news for his racing rather than his facial hair. The son of an Olympian and world champion track cyclist, Geschke has cycling in his DNA. What are your favorite pre-race and post-race meals? In the WorldTour, races provide the basic stuff like pastas and oatmeal. It’s always funny to eat at a race buffet, where they serve pretty much what any lazy, single, 30-year-old male (me) would cook for himself every day, and look over to see Cavendish or Sagan eating the same crap, as if they’re not millionaires who could do better. I’d order room service every night if I had their contracts. In fact, that would be in my contract. But there’s an important component that you left out: Who’s paying for this hypothetical meal?
