it’s official!

Seven years—and 11 days—after big brother William went public with his engagement on Nov. 16, 2010, Prince Harry has made things official with actress Meghan Markle (see p. 4), to the delight of royal watchers and Suits fans alike. It’s not the first time an actress will marry a prince, with Grace Kelly also abandoning her flourishing career for love. Here, a guide to announcing intentions, royal style.…

prince harry & meghan markle engaged!

The changes were happening in plain sight, but they were still easy to miss. There was Prince Harry, hitting the gym with increased frequency, looking just a little fitter than he did this time last year. The former army captain was refining his diet, too, recently remarking that he had given up pizza and was educating himself about wine. Perhaps most tellingly, his longtime bachelor pad at Kensington Palace was in the midst of an overhaul—interiors being redone, spruced up and spiffied. Those close to Harry, however, knew exactly what was happening: Head-over-heels in love with US actress Meghan Markle, he was steadily shaping himself into her future husband. From cab sav to home cooking, “he has been catching up quick,” says an insider. The same can be said for his…

WHERE Although William and Kate wed at London’s grand Westminster Abbey, experts suspect Harry and Meghan will choose something a little more low-key. Among the contenders: St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. (Sadly, there would be no balcony kiss!) WHO The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, is expected to officiate. “I wish them many years of love, happiness and fulfillment,” he tweeted. WHEN Spring 2018. ‘vile and crude’

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, AT THE height of his success, Don Burke told WHO that when he died he’d like to be remembered simply as “a good gardener”—a reasonable expectation of a fitting epitaph back in 1992. Today, though, much has occurred to bury that simple wish. On Nov. 27 the TV presenter who gained celebrity status through his popular 1987–2004 Nine Network series Burke’s Backyard was accused of being a sexual predator who bullied and harassed a string of female employees. “He was a vile, vile human being,” former Burke’s Backyard producer Bridget Ninness said in a joint Fairfax Media-ABC investigation. “He was lewd and he was crude.” Another former producer tells WHO he was extremely difficult to work with. “He was full of sexual innuendo and he was a…

red carpet standouts

MOST OF THE ARIA NOMINEES had headed inside Sydney’s The Star by the time former One Direction singer Harry Styles walked the red carpet—but there was no missing the noise of screaming fans greeting him on his arrival. The popular Brit drew serious focus, but Australia’s big music night saw plenty of locals make their fashion mark on the way into the ceremony, which this year heavily celebrated independent artists like Dune Rats (who took their mums). Dressed in a shimmery emerald gown, Kasey Chambers wrote on Instagram “My beautiful friend @ reneelovesfrances MADE me this amazing dress for the @aria_officialawards tonight!!!!!!” For others, just making an appearance was an achievement. This year’s Voice champion Judah Kelly told WHO, “A year ago, I was watching the ARIAs on TV. I couldn’t…

stu’s big day

TOAST OR ROAST? GIVING A SPEECH AT her beau’s 45th birthday party in Sydney on Nov. 23, Sophie Monk was her usual straight-talking self.“Stu and I are very similar—we’re not very good at rules,”the Bachelorette began, as Stu Laundy looked on, smiling. “We were meant to be in lockdown, [but] we saw each other more than any other couple … I’d leave a key down in the garage and he’d just pick it up and go straight into the room. He had that arrogance in there. He knew he was going to win.” While her comments sparked buzz that the show was rigged in the millionaire publican’s favour, Monk, 37, clarified on Instagram:“I sneakily saw him AFTER we had finished shooting the show, before the finale aired.” The fledgling couple have been…
