australia’s red-carpet royalty

Nicole Kidman has been Australia’s golden girl for as long as I can remember. She’s had a career most actors and actresses can only dream of, playing emotionally demanding and undeniably risky characters on the small and big screen and in theatre. It’s no secret that in the TV and film industry, roles begin to disappear when women meet a certain age – but Nicole has managed to create a career resurgence in hit after hit. This year alone, Nicole stars in three films – Aquaman , Boy Erased and Destroyer . Her talent speaks for itself and she’s paving the way for so many actresses to follow her, but setting the bar very, very high. What I love most about Nicole is her honesty and her warmth. She’s been…

rain hail or shine

There wasn’t a dry guest in sight, but that didn’t stop Cross Counter prevailing at the Nov. 6 Melbourne Cup in Flemington. “It’s a huge thrill to win this race,” said jockey Kerrin McEvoy, who rode the three-year-old across the winning line, claiming a $7.3 million prize. Despite being the most inexperienced runner, Cross Counter swooped down the outside to snatch victory by a teeth-clenchingly narrow margin. Although punters kept their eyes on the track, fashion enthusiasts averted their attention to the frocks and hats trackside. Bright jewel tones made a colourful contrast from the strict monochromatic outfits of Derby Day three days before. Everything from wide brims to gem-encrusted headbands brought life to a dreary afternoon. Guest of honour, Australian actress and former Dynasty star Nathalie Kelley, was over an hour…

murder call

JEFFREY BROOKS WAS AN experienced shooter – he’d been around guns all of his life. That’s important to know. On March 13, 1996, Brooks, 24, was found slumped over in the front seat of his car, a bullet wound in his chest, at a farm south of Brisbane. At the time, police said Brooks accidentally shot himself, but for more than 22 years his parents have maintained his death was no accident. It was murder, they say. “Jeffrey’s killer should have been got within a couple of hours,” Brooks’ mother, Wendy Brooks, told Seven Network’s Sunday Night. Now there are fresh hopes the truth of Brooks’ death will be revealed. Evidence, including revelations he feared he was about to be killed, have prompted the Queensland Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath to direct the state…

‘best day of our lives’

JUST WEEKS AFTER SHE TIED the knot with television writer Brad Falchuk, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, 46, has shared some intimate photos from the couple’s soirée on her lifestyle website, Goop. From the couple’s lavish rehearsal dinner to Paltrow’s stunning Valentino couture gown and the intimate moment she shared with daughter and bridesmaid Apple before walking down the aisle, the actress and lifestyle entrepreneur released 48 images – “a little look at the best day of our lives,” she wrote – on Nov. 2. “The revelry started the night before with a rehearsal dinner, where wedding guests dined alfresco under a canopy of bistro lights,” a statement on Goop revealed. “And for the big day: perfect weather, a superlative dinner, a dance party for the ages and a dress that defies adjectives ...…

the queen’s gift to meghan

IN A MOVE SET TO BREAK ROYAL protocol, the Queen has reportedly invited Duchess Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, to spend Christmas Day at her country estate in Norfolk along with the rest of the royal family – including the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. “It’s a mark of the Queen’s respect for Meghan and an acknowledgement that she doesn’t have any other relations in the country – unlike Kate, who has the support of a very close family,” a source told the UK’s Daily Express on Nov. 5. While Kate’s family has spent Christmas Day with the royals in the past, they’ve never stayed at the same estate as the Queen. News of the Queen’s rare offering comes as Ragland prepares to make a permanent move to Britain to be closer to her…

pamela & julian’s bizarre relationship

ACTRESS PAMELA ANDERSON IS urging Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison to get behind WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and to “take him back to Australia”. In an interview with 60 Minutes on Nov. 4, the animal-rights activist, 51, opened up about her friendship with Assange, whom she met two years ago. “I wanted to meet him because I wanted to ask him how to be a more effective activist,” Anderson said, adding they have a special relationship. “We don’t have a romantic relationship like that, but I feel close to him. And I feel closer to him than a lot of people have and he trusts me.” Assange, 47, has been granted asylum at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, where he has stayed since 2012, after leaking classified military and diplomatic documents. •…
