Model Kate Upton is just the latest fashionista to score herself a sportsman, with her dream wedding to baseball pitcher Justin Verlander in Tuscany (see p. 42). According to the world’s highestearning model, Gisele Bündchen, a pro athlete and a catwalker make for a great team. “I think we have been growing and learning a lot from each other,” she said in May of her husband of eight years, US footballer Tom Brady, with whom she has two children. Sounds like a good catch.…

melbourne cup

And they’re off! SKIRTS AND HATS WERE IN peril from strong wind gusts, but the rain held off while an Irish horse romped home to claim victory at the Nov. 7 Melbourne Cup in Flemington. “I just can’t believe it,” said jockey Corey Brown, who rode Rekindling across the line, claiming a $3.6 million win in a dramatic last-second snatch from fellow Irish horse Johannes Vermeer. “Corey gave an unbelievable ride,” said Rekindling’s trainer, Joseph O’Brien, victorious in his first Cup. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet to be honest.” But while punters stayed keenly focused on the track, fashion followers’ eyes were on the frocks and hats trackside. Bright jewel tones made a colourful change from the strict black-and-white tones of Derby Day three days before (see next page). Everything from…

derby day

ONE AWKWARD OUTFIT double-up, two former soap stars, Victoria’s Secret Angels and a hat that turned heads. This year’s Derby Day on Nov. 4 at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse was one to remember. Myer ambassador Jennifer Hawkins and reporter Francesca Cumani dressed in identical Myer-brand frocks and former local ladies Natalie Imbruglia and Melissa George visited, as well as models Elyse Taylor and Shanina Shaik. In ribbon-trimmed braids, “Shanina had a great time and I had a giggle or two with her,” says her stylist Michael Azzollini. Karl Stefanovic strode in with his girlfriend, model and shoe designer Jasmine Yarbrough, and The Block winners Elyse Knowles and Josh Barker also adhered to the black-and-white dress code, but it was Deputy Liberal Leader Julie Bishop’s dramatic headpiece that stole the show. MATCHY MATCHY Snap!…

secret expliofesed

AS A WAY OF COPING WITH HIS trauma, aspiring actor Harry Dreyfuss would tell the story at parties for laughs: the time when his idol, Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey, secretly groped him at the age of 18 in the company of his father, actor Richard Dreyfuss, in 2008. The joke fell apart when people came back with similar stories involving the star. Wrote Harry in BuzzFeed News: “They would respond by saying, ‘I know a guy that that happened to as well.’” Those victims are now finding their voice. Since Star Trek actor Anthony Rapp claimed on Oct. 30 that Spacey made inappropriate sexual advances towards him when he was 14, multiple allegations have been squared against the 58-year-old House of Cards star. Among his accusers are an anonymous man who told…

stop the lies!

FOR MOST NEW COUPLES, A quick kiss wouldn’t merit notice. For Bachelorette star Sophie Monk and boyfriend Stu Laundy, each step has been dissected and scrutinised. “We haven’t had privacy yet, to be honest,” Monk told Lisa Wilkinson during a Nov. 6 Huffington Post Australia Facebook Live chat. “Even normal people take photos!” But, she acknowledged, “It’s part of what I’ve signed up for.” To placate any doubters, Monk, 37, still had to tell Wilkinson she and Laundy had seen each other that very morning, and two days earlier, publican Laundy, 44, told The Daily Telegraph, “In simple terms, I have been dating Soph for a couple of months.” He then added, “What sort of couple who have been dating that long get asked, walking down the street, about kids, marriage,…

CONTINUING A STRONG SHOWING FOR their Oscar campaign, First They Killed My Father director and co-writer Angelina Jolie (see p. 34) and writer Loung Ung took out best foreign-language film at the 21st annual Hollywood Film Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Nov. 5. “We are here to celebrate the craft of cinema, the expertise and excellence that all of you put in to create truly moving stories,” announced host James Corden. “And who better to do that than me, the voice of Hi-5 from The Emoji Movie?” Accepting his career-achievement award, Gary Oldman said: “Like many of you here, we all show up to make something grander than real life, and perhaps just maybe to find something of a truth in it. It’s indeed a very special way…
