the duchess of style

When Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, stepped out in an olive green Ralph Lauren dress at Prince Louis’s christening on July 9, she cemented her spot as the undisputed duchess of style. In her first few official events, she wore different neutral shades that were pretty but very royal and traditionally British. She was glamorous in an off-the-shoulder Carolina Herrera dress at Trooping the Colour, and elegant in a rose-coloured Goat dress at Prince Charles’s birthday garden party, but when she broke the beige streak by wearing a bright yellow dress by American designer Brandon Maxwell at the Youth Challenge Reception, she struck a chord with a younger, more fashionable royal fan. Can’t wait to see what she wears next! Hope you enjoy the issue. COVER, NOLL: LAWRENCE FURZEY; THIS PAGE: GETTY…

a royal celebration

Arriving at the doors of the Chapel Royal inside St James’s Palace under bright summer skies, the Duchess of Cambridge beamed with happiness as she looked down at Prince Louis swaddled in her arms. To her left, Prince William led Prince George and Princess Charlotte by the hand, while slightly behind Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex—dazzling in an olive-green Ralph Lauren dress and matching hat by Stephen Jones—also joined fingers in an open display of newlywed bliss (the couple reportedly gave Prince Louis a rare first-edition copy of A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, dating to 1926 and valued at $14,000). With Prince Charles and Camilla having led the procession into the chapel, the family joined the guests and godparents in a 40-minute service led by the Archbishop of Canterbury,…

the gown’s amazing history

The family heirloom is a replica of the historic royal christening gown first worn by Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter, also named Victoria, in 1841. It was worn by 62 royal babies (including The Queen, right, when she was Princess Elizabeth, being held by her grandmother Queen Mary in 1926) before it was deemed too fragile to be used again. It was hand-washed in spring water and stored in a dark room between christenings. The Queen’s first child, Prince Charles (left, with his mother, then Princess Elizabeth) wore the original robe at his christening in 1948. The replica robe (worn by Prince George, right, with the Duchess of Cambridge at his christening in 2013) was first worn by the Queen’s grandson, Viscount Severn, in 2008. Princess Charlotte (left) wore the gown when she was…

pippa’s outfit

Prince Louis’s aunt, Pippa Middleton, attended the christening in a dress by Alessandra Rich. The pale blue silk crepe de chine pleated design by the Italian-born, London-based designer was custom-made to fit the expectant mum perfectly. “This is the first time Pippa has worn the label and we are delighted—she looked beautiful,” Rich tells WHO from Milan. It’s not the first time the luxury label has been associated with the royals. In May, Suits actress Abigail Spencer wore a polka dot design, featuring Rich’s signature lapels and drop-waist detailing, to Meghan and Harry’s wedding. GETTY IMAGES (6); MIDDLE: SPLASH NEWS…

parisian chic

LOOKING CHIC IN A PRINTED tiered skirt and white T-shirt, beaming newlywed Vanessa Paradis lead the charge of style icons at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week in the French capital. In her first appearance since marrying film producer Samuel Benchetrit on June 30, the French actress joined daughter Lily-Rose Depp, 19, and her ex-partner Johnny Depp’s close friend and Pirates of the Caribbean co-star Penelope Cruz, at Chanel’s Fall/Winter Haute Couture presentation held in the Grand Palais on July 3. In a tweed mini from the label that showed off her tanned legs, Cruz was making her debut as a Chanel brand ambassador, an announcement that had been made that day. “It’s not just the image and the fantasy; you look at every single thing he creates, he’s a true artist,”…

thai cave rescue saved at last

AS THE EIGHTH BOY EMERGED from the cave system in northern Thailand on July 9, hopes soared that rescuers would make a clean sweep of safely bringing out all 12 soccer players and their coach. At press time, experts and divers, including a team of Australians headed by Dr Richard Harris—who cleared the boys for their exit mission—had triumphed, saving eight members of the Wild Boars team, who had been trapped in the flooded Tham Luang caves for 16 days. With each rescue effort, the expectations of families and the hundreds of volunteers at the cave site of a successful outcome continued to grow. “Watching the elation of the volunteers here ... it’s loud, it’s tangible, it’s full of joy and a wonderful thing to watch,” says Seven news journalist…
