behind the scenes

We had the pleasure of putting on our spectacles, rolling up our sleeves and carefully narrowing down the list of WHO’s Most Beautiful People of 2019. Highlights included shoots in sunny Darwin, exclusive studios in Los Angeles, Sydney and Melbourne – covering a diverse range of Hollywood stars, Australian performers, talented athletes and media personalities who encompass beauty in every form. Award-winning actress Miranda Tapsell was a ray of sunshine who embraced her natural surroundings, Australian sweetheart Isla Fisher opened up about her famous husband’s (Sacha Baron Cohen) most beautiful qualities, and a cross-generational form of beauty was at the centre of our chat with new mum Home and Away’s Penny McNamee, who shared her raw experience of motherhood. Kate Ritchie put it perfectly when she said, “The older I get, I…

celebs take coachella

It’s the US desert music festival that boasts celebrity attendees and revellers from all over the world. With headlining acts including Perth’s Tame Impala, Childish Gambino and a debut performance by Ariana Grande, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival celebrates its 19th year in Indio, California. Grande’s set impressed, with Lance Bass, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick from NSYNC joining her on stage to perform the band’s 1997 classic ‘Tearin’ Up My Heart’. Jordyn Woods and Kim Kardashian West’s ex-husband Kris Humphries partied at the Tao x Revolve afterparty while Aussie model Shanina Shaik, who was with Humphries, reportedly leaned over to Woods and said, “I pray for you.” A wild time was also had by Australian fitness model Tammy Hembrow, who was filmed passed out and snoring less…

tragedy in paris

ON APRIL 15, BYSTANDERS IN PARIS watched hopelessly as the famous 12th-Century built Notre Dame Cathedral erupted in flames. Firefighters battled to save the 850-year-old building, but the 90m spire collapsed in front of horrified onlookers. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his sorrow on Twitter. “Our Lady of Paris in flames – I’m sad tonight to see this part of us burn.” Witnesses described their horror at seeing the fire. “Everything is collapsing,” a police officer said, with eyewitness Jacek Poltorak adding, “I see no hope for the building.” Fortunately, none of the 13 million annual visitors were in the building at the time, due to extensive renovations taking place to restore the cathedral after damage caused by hundreds of years of acid rain and pollution. After hours of fire-fighting efforts, Paris fire…

wikileaks founder arrested at embassy

IN DRAMATIC SCENES ON APRIL 11, LONDON’S Metropolitan Police arrived at the Ecuadorian Embassy, where Julian Assange had been living in asylum for seven years, to forcibly put the WikiLeaks founder in handcuffs and usher him into an armoured vehicle. “The UK has no sovereignty!” he declared. “UK resist! Resist this attempt by the Trump Administration!” Assange, 47, was taken into custody on a minor warrant related to a 2012 failure to surrender to the court, Metropolitan Police reported. Hours later, US officials announced that he had also been charged with a single count of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion. If found guilty, he faces up to five years in prison. WikiLeaks rose to fame in 2010 when it published classified US documents. Australian-born Assange was granted asylum in 2012 to avoid…

‘i still care about richie’

AFTER A WHIRLWIND FEW YEARS since appearing on the 2016 series of The Bachelor and winning (then losing) Richie Strahan’s heart, Alex Nation, 27, is taking another shot at finding “the one” on this year’s Bachelor In Paradise. While Richie lay low after their split, Alex has continued to live in the spotlight, sharing her family life, relationships and radio show with her fans. The most notable headlines were of Alex’s same-sex relationship with AFL teammate Maegan Luxa, who she began dating in November 2017 after splitting with Richie. “When it comes to love, my friends and family would tell you that my heart isn’t one to discriminate,” Alex posted on Instagram at the time. “I very much fall for a person and the connection that I share with them.” Now, speaking to…

‘the secret to my marriage’

Hugh Jackman is famous for many things: acting, singing, dancing, hosting awards shows and getting (really) ripped. But while he loves it when fans call him Wolverine or sing a few bars from The Greatest Showman, the 50-year-old Aussie has a soft spot for a role he played in 2008: People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive. “I am still giving out copies to everyone I meet,” he says with a chuckle. “It’s getting embarrassing.” Which brings us to that other Jackman talent: self-deprecation. He may work harder than anyone in Hollywood, but he never takes himself too seriously. Lately he’s been busier than ever, voicing an explorer in the animated movie Missing Link (out now) and headlining his first world tour, The Man. The Music. The Show, which launches in May.…
