a win for women

While HBO series Game of Thrones and breakthrough comedy Fleabag took home the most gongs at the 2019 Emmys, it was Michelle Williams who will undoubtedly be etched in our memories after her rousing speech. When accepting her award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role as Gwen Verdon in Fosse/Verdon, Williams, 39, used the opportunity at Sunday’s ceremony to campaign for equal pay. “Thank you so much to FX and Fox 21 Studios for supporting me completely and paying me equally because they understood that when you put value into a person, it empowers that person to get in touch with their own inherent value,”Williams said. “So the next time a woman, and especially a woman of colour, because she stands to make 52 cents on…

pretty in pink …

Making her way down the crowded purple carpet to the 71st Emmy Awards on September 22, This is Us star Mandy Moore was feeling honoured – and hot. “We’re here in the company of Game of Thrones and the best television that’s ever been made,” she said, while also embracing the not-so-glamorous aspects of the event. “You just have to accept it. It’s very hot and humid as usual.” Inside the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, things sizzled from the jump. With no host for only the fourth time, the evening’s proceedings were kicked off by Homer Simpson – who was swiftly hit by a falling piano – and after a few comedy bits, it was trophy time. “It looks pretty on TV, but it’s like a hot Bikram yoga class in here…

party time!

With the formalities out of the way, A-listers scattered around Los Angeles with parties hosted by Netflix, HBO and Amazon Studios, in addition to the annual Governors Ball. Before the ceremony, Emilia Clarke told Entertainment Tonight the Game of Thrones cast had already reunited at a pre-Emmys bash. “I left at a reasonable hour because we had to get our beauty sleep for the red carpet,” she said. Post-Emmys, she noted, “There is no red carpet – we are going to get lit!” An eyewitness at Netflix’s bash spotted Clarke dancing to Salt-N-Pepa’s ‘Push It’ with Kit Harington. “He placed his hands on her shoulders, and they shared a cute moment together,” a source tells E!. “DAMN did that dance floor take a beating,” the mother-of-dragons later posted on Instagram, showing…

On the first day of their South African tour, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shimmied their way into the Nyanga Methodist Church in Cape Town, setting the pace for what promises to be an upbeat visit to a country Prince Harry cherishes. Met by dancers and cheering crowds on September 23, the royal couple laughed as they took up the invitation to dance, Meghan beaming as she clapped and moved to the music, before reaching for her husband’s hand as they continued. “They’ve got their African moves,” said onlooker Nosisana Nama. “They really enjoyed coming here and sharing this day with us.” “I am here with you as a mother, as a wife”— Meghan Looking relaxed and stylish in a black-and-white wrap dress by Mayamiko (a fair-trade brand from Malawi, a…

carter drama turns deadly

THE BIZARRE FAMILY DRAMA surrounding Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter and his younger brother Aaron has taken another turn, with Nick beefing up security after taking out a restraining order to protect his family against his sibling. This came after Aaron shared a video on Instagram on September 21 in which he threatened to “kill everyone”. In court papers relating to the order, Nick alleges that during a FaceTime conversation in August between Aaron, 31, and their sister Angel, Aaron said: “I have thoughts of killing babies.” Nick, 39, and his wife, Lauren Kitt, are expecting their second child in weeks, having suffered a miscarriage last year. “There is definite concern for Lauren and this situation has been very stressful for her,” a source told Us Weekly. “She’s very close to her due…

gosling charges upgraded

MELBOURNE IT WORKER ANDREW Gosling is facing 15 years in prison and an excruciatingly painful caning after it was alleged he threw a wine bottle from a high-rise building in Singapore, killing a 73-year-old grandfather. The 47-year-old, who worked for Australian mining multinational Orica, was initially charged with causing death by a rash act, a crime which carries a maximum five-year sentence. But on September 21, prosecutors upgraded Gosling’s charge to voluntarily causing grievous hurt with an instrument over the August 18 incident. It is alleged Gosling hurled a $40 2016 Polissena Il Borro bottle from the seventh-floor balcony of the 35-storey Spottiswoode 18 complex towards a fifth-floor barbecue area, where the bottle hit Nasiari Sunee on the head. The grandfather of nine suffered multiple heart failures and died in hospital…
