who turns 28!

In 1992, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were blissfully married, Princess Diana was dominating headlines and, as we discovered this week by going back through old issues of WHO, Nick Nolte was the Sexiest Man Alive. Oh, how times have changed! This week was a particularly special one for the team at WHO as it marked 28 years since its first issue hit the shelves with Murphy Brown star Candice Bergen on the cover. Some of the other stand-outs from that year are above! On a personal level, I feel very privileged to work for a title that has covered some of the world’s biggest events in news and entertainment for nearly three decades – the September 11 terrorist attacks, the death of Princess Diana, Brad Pitt divorcing Jennifer Aniston (and later…

who.what.where

The one where … it’s actually on!! News that the six castmates of Friends have finally agreed to appear together in a reunion show sent fans and celebrities into a social media frenzy last week. Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry have negotiated a deal worth a reported $3.78 million each for the HBO special, set to be broadcast in May. The unscripted trip down memory lane will be filmed on the same soundstage of the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank, where the 10 seasons were shot, and led to speculation that a new series may follow. The show’s legion of famous admirers were quick to jump online to express their disbelief and excitement ... It’s Hizzo! Harry Styles and Lizzo have been playfully flirting for…

the queen fights back

New tensions between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and the royal establishment boiled to the surface this week after the couple reacted badly to being told they were banned from using the brand ‘Sussex Royal’ for their charitable foundation and official website. The Queen was forced to intervene personally to let them know that, if they didn’t want to be royals, use of the term was not appropriate. A Buckingham Palace statement read: “Given the specific UK government rules surrounding use of the word ‘royal’, it has been therefore agreed that their non-profit organisation when it is announced this spring, will not be named Sussex Royal Foundation.” It was a humiliating blow for the embattled couple, who posted a 114-word response on their website hours later that many royal watchers saw as…

a year filled with pressure

On February 19, Queen Elizabeth II, decked out in regal purple and her signature Launer London handbag, looked a symbol of strength as she stepped out to officially open a new hospital. She was all smiles despite the recent family dramas, including two divorce announcements in her extended family as well the rumbling controversy of her grandson Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s transition out of royal life. It was also, as chance would have it, her disgraced son’s Prince Andrew’s 60th birthday. Amid all the turbulence of what some are calling her second ‘annus horribilis’, the 93-year-old monarch, whose husband Prince Philip, 98, is ailing, has remained a steadying – and formidable – presence, as witnessed by her decisive response to the ‘Sussex Royal’ issue. She also had the embarrassment of…

4 lives stolen ‘they deserved to be safe’

One look at Hannah Clarke’s Facebook profile shows how much she loved her three children. Her page is filled with smiling photos of daughters, Aaliyah, 6, and Laianah, 4, and cheeky 3-year-old son, Trey. On the website for Integr8 gym, where Hannah was a fitness trainer, she is described as “an enthusiastic, passionate mother of three” and that “developing the physical abilities of children is where her true passion lies”. But despite how much she loved her children, Hannah, 32, couldn’t protect them – or herself – from domestic violence. Last year, Hannah made the courageous decision to walk away from her abusive estranged husband Rowan Baxter, taking the three children with her. She moved in with her parents so they could provide a support network, but it wasn’t enough to…
