As time passes, change is inevitable. The task for any organization is to find the opportunities in-side the challenges. We are now entering a period of change in our tastings, and we are planning to use it as a springboard to position our editorial team for continuity and success in the coming years. Senior editor James Laube, who joined Wine Spectator in 1981, has been the linchpin of our coverage of California wine, reviewing thousands of the state’s wines annually. Several years ago, Jim told us he wanted to step back from tasting newly released wines in order to focus more on his writing. Sassicaia Sentiment I was reading a recent issue of Wine Spectator and was impressed by a letter entitled “First Sassicaia Class” (Feedback, June 15) in which the author shares the memory of a tasting of Cabernet Sauvignon wines she attended together with her husband, over 20 years ago. This tasting included Sassicaia, the wine my family produces in Tuscany. napa voters reject oaks measure

In a nail-biter of an election, Napa County voters rejected Measure C, the ballot proposal that could have restricted vineyard development in Napa’s watersheds. The controversial measure was voted down in June by a slim margin of just 641 votes out of 35,707 cast. “Like many, we were anxiously awaiting the results,” said Ryan Klobas, policy director for Napa County Farm Bureau, which opposed the measure. “And we’re very pleased with the outcome.” But the war over Napa’s hills is far from over. Measure C supporters have promised a new ballot initiative. Opponents are asking for both sides to work with local officials to address any concerns over the wine industry. “There’s going to be a lot of work to do moving forward,” said Klobas. In a move that blends continuity and change in Wine Spectator’s comprehensive coverage of California wine, senior editor and Napa bureau chief Kim Marcus has been appointed lead taster for the state’s Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, and senior editor James Molesworth will become lead taster for Cabernet Sauvignon. These categories were long reviewed by senior editor James Laube, 66, who joined Wine Spectator full time in 1983 and who during his career with the magazine has reviewed every category of wine made in California, as well as wines from around the world. “After more than 30 years of tasting thousands of wines annually, I’ve decided to step back from reviewing new releases,” Laube said. “I want to devote more time to writing and take a different approach to reviewing wines.” Laube will…

Introducing the top vintners of tomorrow. On June 5, the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis, held a scholarship reception. Pictured are the group of Davis undergraduates and graduate students awarded scholarships from the Wine Spectator Scholarship Foundation for the next academic year. In total, WSSF has supported 510 students with 790 scholarships over 32 years at the school. Since its inception in 1982, the foundation has provided grants and scholarships to a variety of wine and culinary programs, raising more than $20 million for education.
