Going wild and wonderful Like many people, we have a lawn in our back garden. For some reason, lost in the mists of time, the task of mowing domestic greensward has traditionally fallen to the man in the house. This may be because it involves a machine, although quite why the same doesn’t apply to hoovering is a bit of a mystery. So I’ve long been a regular with the lawnmower (and, I hasten to add, lest you think me chained to traditional gender roles, a vacuum). But my daughter suggested turning the lawn into a wild flower meadow. Not only does it look lovely, I don’t have to mow it any more! Find out how to do the same on page 42.…

from us to you

Seals of approval Thumbs up to The Wildlife Trusts for their education and conservation efforts, which have helped to increase the numbers of grey seals. Our UK coastlines are home to 40% of the entire world population of these marine mammals, with most living on the rocky northern and western shores. They’re visible at any time of year, so look out for their silky heads bobbing above the surface of the water. Visit wildlifetrusts.org to find out more. SLEEPING BEAUTY Getting your ‘beauty sleep’ isn’t just an old wives’ tale. Sleep encourages the production of collagen, which strengthens and repairs the skin. Eating less sugar, reducing screen time before going to bed and getting regular exercise promotes a healthy sleeping routine – and a glowing complexion. Controversial keepsakes Do you hold onto keepsakes from past…

letter of the week

NEVER GIVE UP When my husband Jim retired, he wanted a new hobby, while we were travelling around the world in our motorhome. I would be busy doing embroidery or sketching. He attended one of your writing courses years ago and returned very enthusiastic. Over the years, he has written many novels and two factual books. He had been a bit disappointed that any offers to publish his novels were made on condition he paid the costs! However, he persevered and, last year, his first novel was published. I wanted to say thank you for the encouragement and to let others know that they should never give up. It can happen! His website is jamesajones.co.uk Dot Jones, Cheshire…

what you’re wearing

MICHELLE CURTIS, 58 Tell us about your look My style is relaxed with jeans and tops. But I do throw in the odd expensive item, like this coat. I bought it from a boutique in Brighton called Mottoo. I love the shape with its hem, and the print. My jeans are Hollister and my trainers are from Sweaty Betty. And the best bit of your body? I’m a fan of it all. PAM PARSONS, 68 Tell us about your look I love clothes and tend to shop by colour, which is a bit at odds with my grey and white look! My mac is Rohan, the gilet is by Sunice – a golfing brand – my bag is Radley, and my trainers are by Reebok. My trousers are from the Shelter boutique store, where I volunteer. My…

my confidence is just a mask for insecurity

Miriam Margolyes comes across as boldly confident. She’s known for being chatty, outspoken and unafraid to voice her opinion. But the 79-year-old actress has now revealed that, beneath the surface, she’s very insecure. She tells Woman’s Weekly, ‘I seem to be somebody of enormous self-confidence, but that is merely masking an anxiety. ‘I used to care a lot about my body, but I’ve been looking at old photographs of myself and I was gorgeous, I have no doubt about that.’ She adds, ‘Not in my body, my body was always floppy and absurd – but my face was gorgeous. ‘And I wish I’d known that because it would have given me more confidence. I had none. I wasn’t sexually confident. I didn’t feel I was attractive, and I was enormously attractive.’ Miriam also wishes she could…
