☛20 OCTOBER 1968 THE FOSBURY FLOP IS INTRODUCED TO THE HIGH JUMP On this day, 21-year-old American high-jumper Dick Fosbury won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Mexico, in the process also setting a new Olympic record. It was the first time his unique technique was seen in an international competition. Until then, high jumpers performed a kind of scissor-jump, running towards the bar and then jumping over one leg first, followed by the other leg (a scissor movement). But Dick had discovered a new way of doing it. He ran to just before the mat, jumped into the air while flipping over, soared over the bar facing backward, and landed on his back on the mat. She’s trained in the Meisner technique of acting, which helps actors prepare emotionally using repetition and improvisation.
