festive flair

A LABOUR OF LOVE All you need to create this lovely tree is a blank wall, some festive décor and pretty odds and ends. Draw the outline of the tree in pencil against the wall, then fill in with your items. Finish off the tree with a statement piece on top. IN THE GARDEN Add festive touches to any tree (or trees) in your garden. A decorated tree or bush at a front door entrance would be especially welcoming and you can do the same with a few large indoor plants. POTTY ABOUT POTS We love this outdoor festive tree feature using rows of potted succulents against a rustic fence. The bench below it finishes off the focal point and would make a perfect spot for setting out gifts. ROLL ON Use that last bit of gift-wrapping…

reaching out

Kate is a big fan of the festive season but she’s also all about giving back. Here are a few highlights from over the years. 2018 Kate stepped out in a festive tartan skirt for a celebration for military families at Kensington Palace with William in the run-up to Christmas. The event, in partnership with the Royal British Legion charity, saw the royals taking part in festive activities such as decorating snow globes, making crackers and throwing snowballs. 2016 Kate, William and Prince Harry were spotted attending a Christmas party in London for youth support service The Mix – a charity that offers confidential support to young people online. The duchess got into the festive spirit by wearing a red and green dress by French designer Vanessa Seward. 2019 The duchess headed to…

where to find your magazines

IT’S time for the holidays and many of us are breathing a sigh of relief as this crazy year comes to a close. But we know this holiday may be like no other – and you’re not necessarily going to be in the place where you usually get your holiday fix of YOU. We know you can’t do without the wonderful stories – and especially the puzzles you adore at this time of year. So keep this page close so you can know where to go if you can’t find your favourite magazine in stores. PRINT The first option is to ask the store employees. It may be that they haven’t yet unpacked the magazines because of all the festive season activities in this hectic shopping period. If they can’t help or don’t have…

kurt russell and goldie hawn

SAVING CHRISTMAS Starring as the perfect Mr and Mrs Claus, iconic Hollywood couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn share the screen in the Netflix holiday film The Christmas Chronicles 2. Cue elves, reindeer and Christmas cheer as Kurt reprises his role as Santa, whose former right-hand elf, Belsnickel (Julian Dennison), is up to no good. After being banished and demoted from Santa’s Yuletide crew, Belsnickel comes up with a plan to entice Kate (Darby Camp), the heroine from the first film, and her friend, Jack (Jahzir Bruno), all in hopes of worming his way back into the magical Christmas village at the North Pole to take revenge on Santa and his missus, and to ruin the holidays. This is the fourth flick on which Kurt (69) and Goldie (75) have worked together. The…

palaeontologist

HOWTOSAYIT: pal-ee-on-tol-uh-jist A palaeontologist is a specialised geologist (someone who studies Earth’s physical structure and substances, the history of rocks, the processes that act on them and the most economical way to use the world’s resources). Palaeontologists specifically study fossils found in the planet’s surface and in this way establish what plants and animals looked like millions of years ago and how they survived. BY THE NUMBERS 227 The distance in kilometres South African Quinton Rutherford (ABOVE) rowed in November to set a new Guinness World Record. It’s the longest distance rowed at sea in 24 hours. Quinton set off from Cape Vidal, which is near St Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal, and rowed all the way to Thompson’s Bay in Ballito, KZN. The previous record, by New Zealander Tim Taylor, was 214km in 24 hours.…

thoughts on covid

I really hope the government is moving heaven and earth to get the Covid-19 vaccine to our shores (YOU, 10 December). We can’t have another year like 2020. HOPEFUL, SMS I was at my GP’s surgery recently. He was very stringent about sanitising the rooms after each visit and saw to patients from early morning until 9pm, as he only admitted one patient at a time, an hour apart as the sanitisation took up a fair amount of time. I asked if he knew of any medical personnel who’d died from Covid. He told me four of his colleagues had passed away from this infection. Three were medical doctors and one was an anaesthetist. He’d also lost patients to this virus. I’m awed by the selflessness shown by medical professionals who risk their…
