christmas in a time of covid

It’s said to be her favourite time of year but this Christmas has been rather different for Her Majesty. In what’s likely to be one of the loneliest festive seasons of her reign, it’s just her and Philip at Windsor Castle with a few family members popping in. The move marks a major break in tradition. For three decades the queen has hosted Christmas at Sandringham in Norfolk with senior members of the royal family. But England is back in the grip of Covid-19 restrictions so she stayed put this year. “Having considered all the appropriate advice, the queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have decided that this year they’ll spend Christmas quietly in Windsor,” a palace spokesperson confirmed. The royal family used to celebrate Christmas at Windsor before relocating to Sandringham in 1988…

what is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is when a computer program or a machine has the ability to learn and think for itself. Apps such as Siri (on Apple devices) and Amazon’s Alexa use this smart technology to recognise speech and understand words in order to react to commands. When you type a word or phrase into the app, Kindly tells you whether it’s potentially hurtful. You can then either choose different words or send the words as you wrote them. “The goal isn’t to punish,” Gitanjali explains. “As a teenager, I know teenagers tend to lash out sometimes. Instead, it gives you the chance to rethink what you’re saying…

So to even the odds a bit you have to allow me two ‘gotchas’. ” The pro doesn’t know what a “gotcha” is but is so confident of winning he agrees and off they go. When they get to the 19th hole the other golfers are amazed to see Pete is in the lead and that the pro has to give him R1 000. “What happened?” one golfer asks the…

roll play

SOME of the fondest memories Irish sisters Izzy and Ailbhe Keane have are of the times they spent playing dress-up as kids. For fashion-lover Izzy (23), who was born with spina bifida and is wheelchair-bound, this wasn’t just about trying on outfits and accessorising – it was also about glamming up her wheelchair for birthdays and special holidays. She and Ailbhe (27) became really good at it over the years – so good, in fact, they turned their hobby into a business. Izzy Wheels started in 2016 and produces bright, stylish wheel covers so other wheelchair users can express themselves and unleash their inner creative spirit. The idea developed a few years ago when Ailbhe was a student at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. As part of her final project,…
