IF WE were allowed to be having many dinner parties, I’m sure the topic of vaccines would have dominated discussions. Of course, the irony of not being able to have those dinner parties until we’ve had the vaccines isn’t lost on me. I’ve been fascinated by how the discussions have been unfolding on social media. There’s a great deal of misinformation and ignorance around vaccines if those conversations are anything to go by. I’m astounded by how many people believe – then share – incorrect facts and fake news. I know it’s scary when you think about the speed at which the Covid-19 vaccine was developed – but the truth is, it isn’t actually that fast. Scientists and doctors have been working on the research for years now without attaching a specific…

OUR BRILLIANT TEACHERS TO THE teachers of 2020, thank you for all the countless hours you spent preparing, marking and making a difference. It doesn’t go unnoticed. You stood in the face of adversity during Covid, putting your own lives at risk for the sake of children that aren’t even yours. You showed up, you smiled and put our children first. For this there are no words to thank you enough. FOREVER GRATEFUL, SMS BEING ROYAL IS THE WHOLE POINT Some people like to applaud Harry and Meghan for breaking away from the “stuffiness and pomp” of the British royal family (YOU, 14 January). Let’s face it, if there were no pomp and circumstance around the royals, we wouldn’t be so fascinated by them! The two were quite happy to have all the advantages of belonging…

living and loving

Wow, can I relate to the letter from Michele who wrote in about her grumpy mom and dad (YOU Say, 7 January)! I know what she’s getting at about her parents’ relationship as my hubby of 52 years and I are exactly the same – all the arguing, disagreements, nitpicking and putdowns. It’s all very sad! But I think it’s more than just ageing. Maybe deafness, dementia, depression and Alzheimer’s? My sister always said, “Ageing isn’t for sissies.” ARLENE CHAPERON, SHARONLEA I could relate to Michele’s letter. My husband and I get on pretty well most of the time, but being together 24/7 now that we’re both working from home can get a bit much. We’ve learnt to appreciate long silences, just sitting together listening to the birds. The other day we had a…

in brief

The morning dawned with a special treat for me: a newcomer to the birdbath with distinctive longitudinal gold streaks on its wide, long-splayed tail. A stunning sight! FERN,SMS Instead of patrolling empty beaches, send the police and army to help in hospitals. WENDY, MIDRAND I was eight and remember standing for hours with my mom and sister on the route which the royal family were going to follow in Johannesburg. The young soldier standing right in front of me passed out from the heat. After what seemed like forever, the royals passed by. I remember the porcelain complexions of the princesses. I’m 82 now. What a privilege to have experienced this special event. DAWN SWANEPOEL, EMAIL Dear low-life husband, men would do anything to have me as their wife, yet you can’t stop chasing trashy women.…

the perks of being posh

YOU’VE got to hand it to Victoria Beckham: she never quite lets us forget about her, does she? Just when she’s the last thing on anyone’s mind, up she pops to say, “Hey, remember me? I’m still here! And I’ve still got stuff to say!” Posh is pushing herself front and centre again, reminding a world in crisis that she’s still evolving and she’s still a force to be reckoned with. And who did she choose to tell this to? None other than British Vogue, the fashion bible she’s regularly graced the glossy pages of in all her pouting prettiness. This time she reverted to a trick she’s tried before: writing a letter to herself. She did it five years ago, when she crafted a missive to her teenage self, talking about how she wished…
