first look at kristen as princess di

It’s uncanny really! An almost spitting-image snap has been revealed of actress KRISTEN STEWART channelling the late PRINCESS DIANA for the upcoming biopic Spencer. The Happiest Season star plays the People’s Princess in the film, which is set at a time in Diana’s life when she decides to end her marriage to Prince Charles. “Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point of her life,” Kristen told entertainment show ET Canada. “It’s a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold on to what the name Spencer means to her.” The film is now in production just one year before the 25th anniversary of Diana’s death aged 36.…

this week in history

On this day, Garry Kasparov, the world chess champion at the time, lost a match – the first in a series of six – against a computer. The match lasted three hours. Garry’s opponent, the IBM computer Deep Blue, was able to calculate the outcome of 200 million moves a second. But Garry fought back and eventually won the series (with three victories and two ties in the remaining five games), walking away with the $400 000 (then about R1,5m) prize money. An estimated 6 million people worldwide watched the matches on the internet. It wasn’t the first time Garry faced off against a computer – he’d also played against Deep Blue’s predecessor, Deep Thought. He played against Deep Blue again in 1997 and this time the computer won the series of six matches with…

some popular veggies

POTATOES, These tubers (swollen underground stems) make up 40% of vegetables sold at fresh produce markets in SA. They’re originally from South America, are rich in vitamin C and starch and a source of carbohydrates. There may be only 570 SA potato farmers today compared to 2 000 farmers 20 years, but farms have become much larger and we’re eating more spuds than ever. Potato farming is also largely mechanised (using machines) and requires little manual labour. When planting potatoes, the soil must be moist and thoroughly ploughed. They’re best suited to a cool climate where the temperature doesn’t get too hot. The soil shouldn’t be too wet or dry – just moist. SPINACH This leafy green veggie is rich in iron, so it’s good for the nervous system and muscle…

what the law says

Robynne Friedman, a Johannesburg-based fertility lawyer, says in terms of the law, a couple may choose an anonymous donor or a known donor. The best option is to choose an anonymous donor “where there’s absolutely no information that might identify him”. Opting for a known sperm donor changes the scenario, she says, and it’s advisable to hire a fertility lawyer to lay down the terms of your agreement in writing. She warns that even with a watertight agreement, there’s still a risk a known donor could claim parental rights. “The minute you establish a pattern for the donor to visit or financially support the child, or to build a relationship, the donor can bring an application to court to claim parental rights,” Friedman says.…
