PEOPLE sometimes ask me how we choose stories to put in the magazine every week – whether it’s hard to produce an issue time and again with a mix of human interest articles, news, celebrities and so on. The answer is that finding stories isn’t hard at all because there’s so much going on in the world. But it’s the moving stories – the ones telling of people’s fortitude and generosity – that we believe are an invaluable part of our lineup. For me this week the stand-out story is the one about Rodwell Khomazana, the nine-year-old Zimbabwean who was mauled by a hyena while he was attending a church service with his gran (see page 10). It’s a harrowing story for sure – what this child has been through doesn’t bear…

teachers, respect!

When two teachers tested positive for Covid-19, my grandson’s preparatory school closed its doors and schooling was done at home via Google Classroom. Because he’s been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, he’s still unable to properly tell the time, so yours truly spent seven hours a day with a manual timer, anxiously checking the roster for when the next scheduled lesson would begin. In between getting him connected on his tablet, I’d do a load of washing, check in, hang the laundry, check in, mop and sweep, check in . . . Due to his learning disabilities his attention span is extremely short and he’s easily distracted. I’d often find him staring into space, fiddling with sticky putty or playing an imaginary drum on the table with his fingers. These activities caused him…

A COP TO BE PROUD OF To Catherine Tladi and your fellow officers, reading your story gives me hope and an immense feeling of pride (YOU, 17 June). Thank you for serving the citizens of SA with dignity, integrity and a fierce resilience to get justice for victims. What an amazing inspiration you and your husband are. Words to live by: “I refresh when I see someone heal.” We salute you, lady in blue. Stay safe, ma’am, and keep fighting the good fight. GRATEFUL CITIZEN, EMAIL CHARLES CAN LEARN FROM HARRY Well said, Marie (YOU Say, 10 June). Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry should be left alone. They’ve done nothing wrong except what Princess Diana desperately wanted to do. Does it not ring a loud bell for anyone that Meghan was contemplating suicide? She asked…

a letter’s not enough!

I read the letter from the mistress to her lover’s wife (YOU, 17 June), and I’m amazed that this Ingrid* thought it would be a good idea to write to Estelle* to give an insight into the part that she, the other woman, played, living on lies and empty promises. Having read her version of the progress of this affair, I get the impression that she’s rubbing the infidelity of her lover in his wife’s face – not only causing her hurt and heartbreak, but revelling in the fact! By going into minute detail of the progress of the adultery from beginning to end, this woman was using the details to absolutely destroy the wife as well as humiliate his children, all of whom are innocent parties in this mess. She had the…

in brief

With regards to the proposed bill on polyandry, it’s definitely a no for me (YOU, 10 June). Imagine, if you can, all your husbands getting sick at once? No thanks! CYNTHIA, MONDEOR I had my Pfizer vaccine jab at Helderberg Hospital in Somerset West, Cape Town, and the whole procedure was like a well-oiled machine. The staff were efficient, helpful and friendly despite the number of people they had to attend to. I now know I have nothing to fear when I get the second dose in July. Well done! HH, SMS I disagree with the letter from Mr Zagnoev saying we need to pay up to fix Eskom (YOU Say, 24 June). What a joke! No matter how much is paid, the financial and investment problems will remain while the thievery of illegal…
