oh hello!

This year has been a challenging one on the parenting front, and while I grappled with the stresses of a son in matric and another in Grade 10 (subject choice agonies!), I knew I was anything but alone. We all have different resources and ways of coping, but this year has really underlined the importance of a support system. Whether it’s grandparents, a spouse, partner, friends, colleagues who’ve been there or even other parents online, parenting is always a group effort. And today’s child will throw the most unexpected curve balls at you when you’re least able to deal with them. It’s hard to imagine anything more stressful than lying awake at night wondering if you’re making the right decisions. So it’s worth reminding yourself, at the end of the day,…

I feel very privileged to be a mother, but it comes with its challenges – like the ever-rising food and fuel prices. Our food budget is getting less and less. With four hungry mouths to feed and the constant question: ‘What’s for supper, Mom?’, the Your Family magazine recipes I’ve collected over the years come in very handy! They’ve also saved me from walking up and down supermarket aisles every night looking for inspiration for what to cook. They not only far outweigh store-bought food and takeaways, but are also very nutritious, filling and quick to make, from soups and salads to one-pot wonders. Thanks to features like Feed Four for Under R50 (September 2013), Budget-Friendly Freezer Meals (August 2016), Comfort in One Dish (May 2018) and As Easy as…

finding timeless gems!

I love hospice shops and second-hand stores, and I love Your Family even more, so you can imagine my surprise when I found two copies of the magazine for sale at our local hospice. It was only when I was looking at items for sale in them that I did a double take at the prices – and checked out the year. They turned out to be the April 2009 issue, which I was delighted about, because I’d lost my own copy of it. I must add that the charity price I paid was nothing, as the magazines are worth gold to me! Ten years after its publication, the April 2009 issue has earned a spot in my kitchen again as a resource for many wonderful and mouth-watering recipes. Keep up…
