tall order

The opportunity to drive the new Land Rover Defender ahead of its launch in a wild and beautiful place was an opportunity of a lifetime. It becomes even more special in light of events since then as getting around the world to drive anything has become a lot harder if not impossible. Land Rover says its new Defender is the most off-road capable 4x4 the company has ever made and that’s a pretty big statement when you look back on its history of off-road vehicles. Unusually for the ute segment, no diesel variant will be offered, but the Gladiator is unlike most other utes thanks to its live axles front and rear, removable hardtop roof and doors, and foldable windscreen. The Gladiator Overland will be equipped with Jeep’s Selec-Trac Active On-Demand 4x4 system with a 2.72:1…

new land rover defender to spawn a family of suvs

When the new Land Rover Defender 110 is launched worldwide later in March it will be the first of a family of new SUVs to wear the iconic nameplate. The Defender 110 won’t arrive in Australia until August but it will be followed by the 3-door Defender 90 in October with the whole range of 110s and 90s expected to be on sale here by year’s end. While some might argue that the Defender 90 is a compact SUV, Land Rover is missing is a true compact SUV with the smallest vehicles in the current range being the Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport cousins. Compact SUVs are popular with buyers and Range Rover could do with a competitor to the BMX X2, Mercedes Benz GLA and Audi Q2 while the Discovery…

THERE’S now a cheaper way to get into a Hemi V8-powered 1500 with full-size rear doors, with RAM Trucks Australia taking the covers off its 1500 Express Crew V8 Hemi. The four-door Express Crew will sit above the entry level 1500 Express Quad, but for the extra coin – RRP is $89,950 plus on-road costs – buyers will nab more space and more features including the addition of an 8.4-inch Uconnect nect touch screen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, as well as a dual-zone air conditioning system. Space will now be on par with the more premium Laramie variant, with the Laramie donating its larger cabin for more head, shoulder and leg room. A sports hood and a black accent package give the Express a fresh look, but it’s still the older DS model…
