christmas calling

It seems to me there are two sorts of people come Christmas time: the ones who thrive on it – such as our creative director Imogene, whose annual traditions inspire this whole issue – and those like me, who leave everything to the last-minute and wake up Christmas morning exhausted (midnight gift wrapping, anyone?!). Luckily for me, I do start thinking about it a bit earlier than most, courtesy of the planning that goes into this issue. I already have my gift list sorted, thanks to our amazing guide (from page 47), and I’ve settled on a theme! Blue, gold and white with touches of nature, inspired by ‘A Magical Christmas’, from page 31. Now all I have to do is make it all happen… In the past, I’ve found it…

colour trends: 2020 vision

ELECTRIC PALETTE Coastal style is no longer clinging to washed-out shades of sky-blue, but ushering in an updated primary version with wow-factor. This dramatic take on blue from Wattyl is imbued with nostalgia, nodding to eclectic interiors of the 1970s. And best of all, the youthful hue pops just as much in real life as on an Instagram feed, making it feel unexpectedly modern. Style it in line with HB’s New Wave Modern trend by pairing vintage silhouettes in bold blue with timber, leather and – believe it or not – even more dynamite colour. Warning: it is not for the faint of heart. MONOCHROME MAGIC Understated beauty is the crème de la crème of interiors in 2020, that’s best achieved with pared-back yet playful design. “For instant French glamour, make a nod…

creative collection: force of nature

AT A GLANCE Who: Trudy Rice What she does: Artworks and home furnishings inspired by nature. Where she’s based: Melbourne, Victoria. Why she does it: “I think this quote from [British advertising legend] Sir John Hegarty sums it up: ‘Creativity is not an occupation, but a pre-occupation’.” Visit: trudyricecollection.com. Follow: @trudy_rice. > Trudy Rice always wanted to make a career out of her art. At high school, she adored art lessons and always dreamt of opening her own gallery – until disaster struck. “At the end of Year 9, I broke my arm horse riding and had to take a couple of weeks off school,” explains the Geelong-born artist. “That meant that I missed the designated day to pick up my coursework for the year and my art teacher threw it out. I was floored that it…
