form & function

One of my favourite things about working on Home Beautiful is seeing firsthand how Australians live in their homes and how these spaces are changing to meet our needs. Two zones that are most responsive to lifestyle trends are the kitchen and bathroom – they have to be, since they’re the hardest-working areas in any home, where new innovations and the latest appliances, finishes and fittings are key to creating spaces that are not just functional, but also on trend. So this month, from page 151, we have pulled together our ultimate guide to kitchens and bathrooms, with six gorgeous rooms plus lots of features on all the key elements that you need to consider before you start renovating. It’s almost spring, so it’s time to give the house a bit…

creative collection: life in motion

Working out of a small studio in the backyard of her East Geelong home, visual artist Emma Itzstein offloads her worries and thoughts onto a canvas with the stroke of a brush. “My work is really quite expressionist and messy, and I just let loose,” says the painter, totally in her element. Artistic since birth, Emma says painting was probably her calling all along – she just hadn’t realised. The Western Australian native spent six years at university in Perth studying law and communications, before first going to work at a design agency, and then in publishing. “I would focus on my artwork in the breaks, mainly working on unique-state printmaking, but it was sporadic,” explains Emma. “IT’S THAT FREEING OF EXPRESSION AND THE MARK MAKING AND THE MOVEMENT THAT I WAS…

clean living

MODERN ALFRESCO DESIGN Queensland couple Lorinda and Patrick love the opportunity to entertain. So when it came to building their dream home, they had two mandatory requirements – seamless indoor/outdoor spaces for living and entertaining, and a sleek, modern design. “We knew from the very start we wanted a modern alfresco look,” says Lorinda. “For me, the modern look is all about clean, straight lines – a bold but simple look with a balance of materials.” The couple engaged Brisbane-based building design studio Big House Little House, and the result is their stunning Trafalgar home. The house features the hallmarks of the overarching modern look, with clean lines and geometric shapes in a monochromatic colour palette. To achieve this, the right materials were paramount. Chosen for its durability and low-maintenance requirements,…
