Mending often evokes thoughts of tiny ladder stitches to repair a ripped seam, mending holes in jeans with matching denim patches or simply sewing a button back on. However, clothing mends don’t have to be discreet, and mending doesn’t need to be a mundane task. Canadian artist and maker Arounna Khounnoraj inspires us to view mending as an opportunity to express our creativity with what we wear. This could be by adding your own personal touch to a favourite pair of ripped jeans with contrasting fabric patches and Sashiko stitching, or by repairing a moth-eaten sweater with colourful appliqués and embroidery designs. HOW TO: WEAVE MEND A HOLE

Arounna shares her steps for repairing a hole in a garment with the weave mend technique. 1 Choose a starting point some distance below and to the side of the hole. Take your tapestry needle with wool yarn and push the needle up from the back to the front leaving a 3in or so tail that you will later weave into the back when you are finished the entire mend.
