THIS MONTH’S WINNER Carol Culey, from Toolijooa, NSW, for her The Happy Quilt project: “It’s amazing how a simple design and lots of little pieces of colour and memories can bring such happiness. The cover of the August 2016 issue was all the inspiration I needed to make this quilt designed by Michelle Bardwell. My version has 3,900 1in squares from my stash and was made as a wedding present for a dear friend. I also fussy cut some dinosaurs, soccer balls and slices of cake for their two little boys to find. For the back, I used larger pieces and some light denim and finished it with diagonal quilting, which gave it a lovely texture. It was a joy to make this quilt and then to see the delight it has brought…

These wonderful pieces of dinnerware often feature iconic imagery of pagodas, cranes and Chinese characters. So too Jessica So Ren Tang’s needle-and-thread translations of these classic ceramics. Her sculptural works feature the ubiquitous patterns of Asian crockery and food packaging. “I look for objects that are nostalgic from my childhood and items that have Asian and American significance,” says the USA-based artist. CRIBS & CRAFTS “I created my first range of quilt patterns with a girlfriend, and we started a company called Hot Possum. We had four children between us and did craft shows with babies hidden in cribs under tables. Then, later, my youngest grew up in the shop, sleeping in a portable cot in the yard out the back!” THE TAKEAWAY MESSAGE “Once I’m in the design process, a lot of things get put to one side, so I can get a design finished while it’s at my fingertips. That’s when I’m a takeaway kind of girl!” “If I couldn’t design, it would be like cutting off my legs.” MY STYLE IS: “Bright, playful, humorous and modern.” MY STYLE IS: “I like to experiment with lots of different design ideas, although I always find myself gravitating towards muted…
