If I had to pick one word that comes up most frequently in conversation with superyacht owners, charterers and designers, it would be “family”. A yacht is a home from home, and what is home without family? Home on board means a place where children want to actually be with their parents (a novelty for anyone with teens), a rare stretch of time when activities trump tech, and a place where old and young come together and create memories that last. pure allure

“Concentrated efforts typically result in a very pure concept design,” says Peder Eidsgaard of Harrison Eidsgaard. For the freshly launched 74.5 metre Abeking & Rasmussen Elandess, the exterior and interior designer describes that concentration as “intense” – his London studio and a responsive owner drove her from initial sketch to build-ready design in just four months. The result is certainly pure, with a metallic graphite grey hull, lean lines, a near-vertical “Atlantic bow” inspired by 20th century Blue Riband liners and no extraneous flourishes. Inside, though, it’s anything but spare, with a treasure trove of exciting features that includes a spiral staircase under the 7.5 metre pool “allowing flickering water-filtered light to cascade all the way down to the lower deck”, says Eidsgaard. Whether you focus on the total number of sales or the combined value, there are many reasons to be encouraged about the performance of the global brokerage market during the first three months of 2018. With 112 yachts changing hands with a combined asking price of €1.098 billion, the signs suggest that this year’s sales by brokers of both secondhand and new build yachts could surpass even 2017’s lofty figures. “This may be a consequence of a very dynamic, yet small market – the 24 to 30 metre segment, consisting mainly of Sunseekers, Ferrettis, as well as Sanlorenzos and Cheoy Lees that have lately become very popular,” says Raphael Sauleau, CEO of Fraser. For nearly everyone yachting is an escape, but for royals, especially when the Princess of Wales and her family were involved, it was usually an ineffective one. In August 1990 even a holiday in Spain was considered public business, and the press corps was well aware of a particular cruise on board the Spanish royal family’s yacht, one of many named Fortuna.
