Famed Italian designer Piero Lissoni doesn’t want a boat: “I’m not crazy!” he exclaims in our Design Report interview on page 142. But where would we be without a little crazy? Certainly without superyachts like Madsummer (page 190), which waggles a dismissive finger at the modern vogue for the muted taupes, greys and beiges so often seen in today’s yacht interiors. And how about The Beast (page 288)? Our “Wild Thing” cover line could equally apply to this incredible camo’d-up catamaran from New Zealand, which owner Sir Michael Hill calls “a little different”. Meanwhile, we managed finally to track down another true individualist this month – Ric Kayne, owner of the utterly unique 63.4-metre SuRi (page 156). Kayne says his converted crabbing boat is “sort of an ugly duckling”, but…

Ellie Brade Growing up on the Isle of Wight, and now based in New Zealand, Ellie has always been surrounded by yachts. She has spent more than a decade writing about superyachts and says she still has pinch-me moments. For this issue, Ellie boarded The Beast (page 288). What was your favourite thing about The Beast ? Her overall look. I love it when people build boats that are really personal and a bit different If she were yours, where’s the first place you’d go in her? I’d go island hopping – either around the Pacific Islands, which are stunning, or maybe Greece The most interesting research trip you’ve ever been on? The huge Doyle Sails loft in New Zealand blew my mind when I first visited it – its sail-making technology is evolving so fast What’s the…

the new no 1

The most advanced research and expedition vessel in the world has hit the water. The mammoth 182.9m REV Ocean, which launched at the Fincantieri/Vard facility in Tulcea, Romania, will be towed to Norway’s Brattvåg shipyard for up to eight months of outfitting. It will then head to Germany for the final stages before completion in late 2020/early 2021. REV Ocean is 2.3m longer than Azzam, previously the world’s largest yacht, and was developed with leading superyacht designer Espen Øino. With a 21,120nm range at 11 knots, this “floating think tank” will provide adventurous scientists with an R&D lab, cutting-edge trawling system for catching live species at up to 3,000m, a moon pool to launch and recover AUVs, ROVs and submarines and much more. Superyacht style, meanwhile, is on show in…

eye opener

In 1956, one of Hollywood’s brightest stars embraced the leading role of princess. In the following years, Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III welcomed Tinseltown to the Principality of Monaco. Kirk Douglas was among their roll call of glamorous guests, but on this occasion, in 1965, Douglas and his wife, Anne Buydens, stayed aboard the classic yacht Malahne, docked in Port Hercules. Sam Spiegel, the Academy Award-winning producer of The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia, owned the classic yacht from 1960 to 1983 and made it an essential part of the Hollywood story for two decades. An invitation to the boat was not to be missed, and Spiegel knew how to impress. “There was caviar, pâté, great wines and bullshots served in alabaster goblets. The service was flawless.…

Giant on the loose Ten years in the making, the first of Benetti’s three 100m-plus superyachts has been handed over to her owners. The 108m IJE has left the builder’s Livorno yard after hitting the water in March. Key numbers include a 14.5m beam, five decks and a whopping 3,367GT volume. IJE marks the largest project to date for British design studio RWD, which handled the exterior and interior layouts. The interior design, meanwhile, was penned in-house and is “clean and light”, according to the captain. More than 1,000m² has been dedicated to exterior spaces, which include an observation deck, 1.5m firepit and a heated swimming pool. Designed to cruise for long distances, the yacht has a range of 6,500nm at 14 knots. benettiyachts.it 50 the record-breaking speed, in knots, of Australia’s…
