editor’s letter

It might at first seem a little like a wasteland out there, with yachting events being cancelled or postponed left, right and centre, but a dive into the stats reveals that 32 superyachts changed hands on the brokerage market in August alone, making it the biggest August for sales in five years. Not even a pandemic, it seems, can get between a yacht lover and the ocean. For those buyers looking to tweak and upgrade their new yacht, this month we’ve put together some inspiring refit stories that we hope will be useful. We’re also hearing that when people are getting on board, they’re staying on board. What would in previous years have been a one-week trip is now a two- or three-week trip. This applies to charter bookings, too.…

Jemima Wilson Jemima is the style editor at creative agency Show London, and editor of Hurlingham Polo magazine. She shares her watch expertise in Brummell and has contributed to The Times LUXX Report. For this issue, she curates our Watch Directory (page 53). What’s your favourite watch in this month’s edit? I have two personal favourites. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Snowdrop Calibre 101 watch for women dazzles with diamonds and is created with the most intricate craftsmanship. And, for men, the Hermès Tourbillon model stands out due to the horse head motif incorporated into the dial design The most remarkable watch you’ve ever come across? MB&Fs Legacy Machine FlyingT is one of the most impressive examples of watchmaking and design I’ve ever seen. A three- dimensional art piece that tells the time, it features a flying tourbillon movement,…

this will rock you

Feadship’s design team at De Voogt Naval Architects has revealed a 109-metre superyacht concept inspired by Freddie Mercury and Forrest Gump. Designed to combine a rock’n’roll lifestyle with design that’s firmly down to earth, Project FG (for Freddie Gump) is described by the yard as a “regal megayacht design with superstar appeal”. Unusual features include an outdoor beach club large enough to host parties of more than 200 people, a Gump-worthy pop-up table-tennis table at the bow and a panoramic piano lounge. The exterior glass features a rather 1970s rock “orange tinge” while a mysterious nightclub is hidden inside the heart of the yacht for exclusive gatherings.feadship.nl…

eye opener

The 2020 US presidential election will be decided while this magazine is on sale. Whether you’re hoping for a red or a blue victory, it’s likely you’ll have a strong opinion (even if you’re not a US citizen) given one of the contenders is the most polarising president in American history. This 1988 image shows Donald Trump in (somewhat) simpler times, when he was a celebrity businessman married to the turbo-glamorous Ivana. Here, they are boarding their newly acquired yacht, Trump Princess. The 86-metre boat was originally launched by Benetti as Nabila in 1980. She was penned by legendary yacht designer Jon Bannenberg for Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi and featured a shimmering silver hull (now repainted in cream) and sharp, distinctive lines. She boasted a patisserie, hospital, helipad and disco.…

Adapted to adventure The first 39.4-metre Flexplorer Aurelia has been launched by Cantiere delle Marche. The explorer, which has a range of 5,000 nautical miles, has been described as a “game changer” by CdM co-founder Vasco Buonpensiere. Designed by Hydro Tec, the Flexplorer combines luxury with practicality. The collapsible aft deck bulwarks fold out to port and starboard to create an “infinity deck”, which is also equipped with a pop-up A-Frame crane (hidden under the deck) capable of lifting 3,500 kilograms. The Francesco Paszkowski-designed interior features accommodation for nine guests, a gym and a wine cellar that spans the main and upper decks inside the stairwell. cantieredellemarche.it 6 METRES the length of the extension to 74.5-metre Amels superyacht Lady E, in her Pendennis refit BOOK OF THE MONTH Showcasing the striking travel photography of…

He’s a singles tennis champion but, when it comes to hulls, it seems Rafael Nadal is very much a doubles man. His new 23.95-metre 80 Sunreef Power catamaran Great White was delivered in the summer in time for his 34th birthday. The multihull features a flybridge with a bar and barbecue, a stern garage for a jet ski, an elegant interior in tones of cream and coffee and 360 square metres of living space. His passion for boats began in childhood, zipping around his home island of Mallorca in his father’s Riviera power boat. He started his own yachting career with a Princess V62, followed in 2017 by Monte Carlo Yachts’ MCY 76 – nipping home between gruelling tournaments for short snorkelling trips or a night of peace on board. But…
