editor’s letter

You would be forgiven for mistaking this issue for our annual Adventure Special, which runs in September, given the amount of space dedicated to the extraordinary people and projects going off-piste (literally – see page 146) this month. From Ocean Dreamwalker III’s tour of Alaska, to expedition vessel OceanXplorer’s bold mission to redefine our understanding of the oceans, it’s reassuring to know 2020 didn’t completely dull our spirit of adventure. A special mention has to go to father-and-son owners Ray and Mark Dalio for investing vast sums in the construction of 87-metre OceanXplorer. Mark, who was interviewed for Sam Fortescue’s excellent feature starting on page 88, even scoffed at the idea of putting a pool or any similar creature comforts on board, such was his focus on science and storytelling…

Kevin Koenig Kevin is an award-winning freelance journalist based in Connecticut, US. He enjoys game meats, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and any and all boat-based adventures. For this issue, he checks out the Mazu 82 (page 116). What was the best thing about the Mazu 82? Her lines, which I’d call military chic. I can’t think of anywhere on planet earth where this boat doesn’t immediately turn heads on arrival to port. Succinctly put, she’s a looker What’s been your greatest on-water adventure? Probably either spearfishing the Great Barrier Reef or free-diving to 20 metres in 600 metres of water in the Bahamas. I’d like to get down to 30 metres some time The most interesting person you’ve ever interviewed? Legendary basketball coach Bob Knight on a flyfishing trip to Bimini: he has such a commanding presence and has…

eye opener

When it comes to an understanding of the oceanic ecosystems, there is a pre- and post-Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Born in 1910, the understated wiry Frenchman and former naval officer was co-inventor of the Aqua Lung, the precursor to scuba. He shared his passion and knowledge via several Academy Award-winning films, more than 100 documentaries and 50 books. The television series The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau inspired a generation to explore the marine world. This photograph is from the episode entitled The Night of the Squid, filmed in autumn 1969 by the crew of Cousteau’s converted navy mine sweeper, the Calypso, and narrated by actor Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone) and Cousteau himself. In the episode, divers and their cameras reveal water thick with silver Sea Arrow squid as they happen upon…
