I’m torn between the old-school elegance of Blue II (page 66) and the no-nonsense styling of La Datcha (page 94). Both capable explorer yachts, but each representing very different personalities. As I type, La Datcha is in the Maldives, on her way to the Kamchatka Peninsula, a vast, largely empty wilderness hanging appendix-like off the edge of Russia. As a place to shake down your new explorer yacht and test all its toys (twin helis and Triton sub, to name but a few), it doesn’t get much better than that. But beyond the headline features, it’s the more prosaic aspects of a boat like this that really ramp up its functionality in far-flung places: the substantial mud room, for getting cold-weather gear on and off, vast wastewater tanks for cruising…

Jeremy White Jeremy is executive editor of WIRED. For this issue, he picks out the best new tech (page 44). What’s your favourite item in this issue’s tech edit? The Bose Frames, for the simple reason that until you try these audio sunglasses you simply won’t believe how good the sound quality is from the tiny speakers embedded in the arms of the glasses. Bose has achieved something of an audio miracle The last piece of tech you bought? The new Spark smart guitar amp by Positive Grid, which is superb. Amazing sound from such a small amplifier, and it has built-in everything, including drum and bass backing that listens to what you are playing and auto adjusts to match. I wish I had this when I was learning guitar 30 years ago Reveal the most…

The yacht about town Feadship’s secretive new 76 metre breaks cover on Aalsmeer’s urban waterways to prepare for delivery The 76.5 -metre Feadship superyacht Boardwalk has emerged from the yard’s Aalsmeer facility to begin sea trials – but she had to make her way through town first. Previously known as Project 707, Boardwalk first hit the water in October 2020 and is due for delivery later this year. The yacht was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and features a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Other details of the project have been kept tightly under wraps. feadship.nl…

eye opener

Blackwater photography has been compared to a treasure hunt and a flight into deep space. It takes courage to dive kilometres offshore into the ocean at night – prime feeding time for animals large and small. It also takes a lot of patience and luck to capture a clear image of the near-invisible aliens that rise every night from the ocean’s depths. Chinese-born wildlife photographer Songda Cai has perfected the art of blackwater photography, and his images of otherworldly beasts have been widely published. He won the Underwater category in the 2020 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, developed and produced by the Natural History Museum, London, with this image of a diamondback squid in the planktonic stage. Using long exposure on his Nikon D580 and a 60mm f2.8 photo lens,…

It has been commissioned by an “accomplished yachtsman” who will captain the boat himself, Heesen reveals. Exterior design has been penned by Clifford Denn, while the “refined but relaxed decor” comes courtesy of Luca Dini Design & Architecture.
