So, it’s Luna Rossa and Emirates Team New Zealand. By the time this magazine hits subscribers’ doormats, we’ll be in the midst of the America’s Cup Match, just a few days from knowing which of these teams will lift the Auld Mug. First off, commiserations to our columnist Sir Ben Ainslie and his INEOS UK team, who Luna Rossa beat in the Prada Cup Final. The columnist for our US edition, meanwhile, is Terry Hutchinson, skipper of American Magic, the first team to be sent home. I hope no one is able to prove a link between writing for BOAT International and losing in the America’s Cup. Turning to this issue, there is no shortage of stories for the sailors among us. Two stunning boats in the shape of CeFeA…

Kate Lardy Kate has been working on and around yachts for more than two decades, first as crew, later in journalism. She writes from her home base in Fort Lauderdale. For this issue, she takes a close look at Custom Line’s Navetta 30 (page 116) and reveals the latest developments in the world of sailing (page 69). Best thing about the Navetta 30? That the designers managed to put so much into a 28.4-metre boat. It’s a cliché to say “it feels like a bigger boat”, but how else do you describe a true tri-deck on that LOA? What new developments in sailing excite you the most? I’m intrigued by the eco developments that allow a proper luxury yacht to run on clean power, such as Sunreef’s 80 Eco The most memorable time you’ve spent with…

Monochrome masterpiece The first in-build Amels 60 goes Dutch to gear up for greatness The first Espen Øino-designed Amels 60 superyacht has arrived in the Netherlands to begin outfitting ahead of its delivery in spring 2022. The first of three Amels 60s under construction, the yacht will feature a “metallic pebble grey” hull with a “Matterhorn white and jet-black superstructure”, the yard says. Winch Design is behind the 830GT interior, which will feature materials such as Jerusalem limestone, matt bleached oak, light-toned walnut and bronze. Jim Dixon from Winch Design says the studio wanted to capture the feeling of a relaxed family home on the water, promoting a “calm atmosphere and involuntary relaxation”. amels-holland.com…

eye opener

Valentines Day 2021 delivered a love letter to Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in its quest for the America s Cup. The Italian team led the fourth race of the Prada Cup Final in Auckland, New Zealand, from start to finish, before going on to win the Prada Cup itself. Photographer Carlo Borlenghi captured the moment at the start of 14 February’s second race when INEOS Team UK’s Britannia II, which started the series a favourite, began heeling. The bucking bronco move sent shivers down the spines of onlookers and rattled the sailors. At these speeds — the average speed in the first race on that day was 37 knots, allowing the lead boat to cover 25 kilometres in 25 minutes — every move counts. Finely tuned machines and evenly matched teams at…
