The 39-metre sailing yacht G2 got the royal treatment when it cruised into Puerto Ayora in the Galápagos last summer (page 102). A band played them in and the owners were met on the docks by the mayor, such was his relief to see a foreign vessel back in his waters. Just a few days earlier, Ecuador had reopened the Galápagos to tourism, and G2 was the very first boat on the scene. Salvador Dalí was the darling of Paris and New York’s high society. Among the artist’s many friends in high places was Arturo López-Willshaw (shown here with Dalí – and dog – in 1956), a Chilean diplomat who made his fortune by selling guano. This fertiliser fortune financed his taste for the finer things in life. The diplomat’s go-to designer was French decorator and antique connoisseur Georges Geffroy, who created the interior of his lavish 59-mctrc 1931 Camper & Nicholsons, Gaviota IV. For his wife, Patricia, he bought a 1952 study by Dali, a Virgin based on the likeness of the master’s muse, Gala.
