editor’s letter

Dear Readers, As Bride & Groom magazine publishes its 100th issue, our thoughts are with the many couples who have had to make the difficult decision to postpone their wedding, and the wedding vendors who have been affected. We hope that you can now focus on making wonderful plans for the future, and that this issue of Bride & Groom helps you do that. Inside these pages we have so many beautiful real weddings to inspire you, including our 2019 Wedding of the Year winners, Bianca and Brett. We loved the Kiwi summer feel of their big day, and how they cleverly incorporated so many personal touches for them and their family. Thank you to all of the wonderful couples who sent us their wedding stories and photos – it’s amazing to…

We’ve been so looking forward to seeing our special 100th issue of Bride & Groom published, at last. Despite all the delays during lockdown, as a nation we can all feel very proud of what we have achieved, and thankfully we can now get back to celebrating beautiful weddings again. Looking back, our first issue was launched in October 1987, just one week before the New York Stock Exchange crash, which effected the world’s economy, forcing New Zealanders to adapt quickly, as the over-indulgences of the eighties came to a dramatic end and austerity set in. It was a tough start for us, but the fact that we are a small, tight, family-run business helped pull us through those hard times, just as it has during the many bumps in the…

the wedding maestro Births, Deaths and Marriages statistics show Aaron Bloomfield is the busiest celebrant in Auckland. We managed to pin him down and find out what he’s about… How did you get into the wedding business? I was working in radio and married a couple live on-air from Fiji, and when I returned my inbox was flooded with enquiries. I took it as a sign that there was a gap in the market for a younger celebrant with a bit of personality. You’re also a singer? Yeah. I discovered my voice after I became a celebrant and I came around to the idea that I could offer both services. Couples seem to love the idea of getting ‘two-in-one’, and that evolved into my Wedding Maestro package. What is the Wedding Maestro package? I…

We’re thrilled to share with you the wedding of Bianca and Brett, our 2019 Wedding of the Year winners. The couple meticulously planned and prepared for their summer beach wedding, filled with special personal touches and gorgeous details. Bianca shares the story of their amazing day… Our wedding was at Brett’s family bach on the beautiful Front Beach, Whitianga. It has been in the family for over 60 years and this was the first wedding held there. Uninterrupted beachfront access paved the way for a sandy ceremony, barefoot on the beach. Under a DIY driftwood arch and in front of all our friends and family we were married. The only hiccup came during Brett’s personalised vows, calling me his husband rather than wife! It snapped the teary-eyed tension and our family…

Sami and Chris created a vibrant and romantic autumn wedding full of beautiful florals, handmade details and thoughtful touches. Sami’s creative vision and passion for planning such a beautiful celebration shone through, and we’ve named her our Bride of the Year! Sami tells us about their special day… Chris and I have travelled the world together, and had our daughter Florence in 2017, so when he proposed we couldn’t wait to start planning our big day. By the time we got married we had been together for 11 years. We wanted something that had never been done before, so we decided to create our own DIY wedding at my mum’s place in Te Kauwhata. We wanted a moody autumn/winter wedding style, and chose the end of April, so it wasn’t too cold…

Michael and Callum, our dashing Grooms of the Year, met at a Dunedin nightclub and soon discovered they shared the same ideals, aspirations, and love of dogs! They worked together to plan a beautiful wedding day to share their love with friends and family. Michael tells us more… After a morning spent excitedly getting ready with our friends and our dogs, we arrived at our ceremony with our bridal party in two retro VW vans, each van matching the girls’ dress colour! A mutual friend was our celebrant – it was so lovely to have someone who knows us well to marry us. Another friend performed a song during the ceremony. That moment of being able to say that ‘you are mine and I am yours’, for the rest of our…
