We don’t always make it easy for ourselves at CAR, not when an issue includes tests of 10 new vehicles (and a Vespa). Formal road testing is a serious business at South Africa’s oldest motoring media brand (we’re the sole local outlet that tests vehicles this extensively), so thought I’d let you in on what exactly transpires during the two weeks a press car spends in the CAR garage. When a new model – let’s use that BMW 320d on the cover as an example – arrives at our offices, usually delivered by a fleet manager tasked with running a manufacturer’s press and marketing convoy, it’s rigorously checked for damage before being signed in. FAITHFUL CAR The 4th of April 2019 marked the 13th anniversary of my first car: a 1,6-litre Ford Fiesta. I recall my late father taking me to CNA to buy CAR magazine. We spent hours scrutinising CAR Guide, comparing all my options. Finally, he took me to the various dealerships to test drive his top choices. With the reveal of its near-production-ready GLB concept, the void between the ageing GLA and recently updated GLC will be filled by Mercedes-Benz as it looks set to take the fight to some tough rivals in the lucrative boutique SUV segment. SPACE UP ITS SLEEVE Spun off an extended version of the W247 B-Class platform, the GLB measures 4 634 mm long, 1 890 mm wide and 1 990 mm high, the lofty latter figure owing to a permanent roof box that’s unlikely to see production. According to Mercedes-Benz, the GLB’s 2 829 mm wheelbase (100 mm up on that of the new B-Class) allows it to accommodate seven passengers, including two “medium-sized” persons in the rearmost, flush-folding individual seats. To celebrate its 70th anniversary of bolting together some of the most desirable sportscars we know, Porsche has released a limited-run 911 Speedster. Based on the formidable 911 GT3, including its lightweight construction and sports chassis with rear-steering module, the Speedster is capped with a manually operated roof stashed beneath that shapely double-domed rear deck. It also shares the GT3’s 4,0-litre flat-six engine which, much to enthusiasts’ joy, can be coupled with a six-speed manual ‘box. Spinning up to 9 000 r/min and developing 374 kW, this unit will rocket the Speedster from 0-100 km/h in 3,9 seconds and on to a 309 km/h top speed.
