from the editor

Avid CAR readers will know detailed technical information has formed the backbone of this publication for more than six decades. The person responsible for ensuring all the befuddling tech hidden away in your pride and joy is explained in layperson’s terms is the CAR technical editor. This month, we say farewell to Nicol Louw, who has held the position for eight years. Thanks to Nicol, our readers (and new members of the CAR team) understand how power and torque work; why LEDs are better than halogens; and why we should be cheerful about the future of the automobile as the motoring industry makes a seismic shift to electrification. I have some good news, though. While Nicol will take up a position at a local armoured-vehicle firm, he’ll stay on as CAR’s technical…

NOSTALGIA vs. REALITY My parents, both in their early eighties, are sprightly and independent. They decided to embark on a road trip from the Cape to Pretoria via Kimberley, and then Kruger National Park. This was not without controversy; my siblings insisted they fly. My dad played on our emotions, claiming this would be their swansong trip; he still had good vision and health; and that he wants to drive through the Karoo one more time. Fortunately, my nephew, a medic who needed some downtime, accompanied them. The retired pair loved their trip, enjoying the beauty our country has to offer. On their way back via Durban, I flew up to drive them to Cape Town. The return trip was uneventful with excellent vistas. However, the idyllic road trip quickly turned…

OVER TO YOU... Please include your physical address and telephone number. Diverse ideas and opinions are welcome but publication of your letter doesn’t necessarily mean we agree. Please stick to a maximum of 300 words. CAR reserves the right to edit and shorten letters owing to space constraints. AUTOMOTIVE AMBITION Years ago, I dreamt of becoming an automotive engineer once I leave university abroad. Today, I still will not let go of my dream and my passion and love for cars and how they function. It all started back in March 2014. At the time, my resources were limited. One evening, I went to Spar and I picked up my very first CAR magazine, “South Africa’s leading motoring magazine”. I was (and still am) impressed with this slogan. I immediately bought the magazine. When…

When the Beetle was launched back in 1938, it went on to revolutionise motoring, turning personal transport from aspirational to attainable. Now, with the reveal of its first standalone-series electric vehicle, Volkswagen looks to flip the switch on this previously niche segment and bring electric motoring to the masses. The ball has already started rolling, with 10 000 units pre-ordered since the ID concept’s unveiling earlier this year and a projected EV production output of 300 000 units per annum from Volkswagen’s Zwickau plant. FLAT PACK PRACTICAL Although its measurements are pretty much identical to those of the current Golf, the ID.3’s modular electric platform (MEB) frees up an impressive amount of cabin and luggage space by locating the flat battery pack underbody. This setup sees the battery, electric motor and single-speed…

nosing ahead

Reports suggest the S58 turbopetrol from the X3/X4 M is destined for the new M4 MIXED-RECEPTION GRILLE BMW’s adoption of ever-growing kidney grilles shows no sign of abating and, set against the Concept 4’s flowing sheet metal, the latest example is particularly attention-grabbing. According to BMW’s designers, this bold frontal treatment pays homage to the similarly prominent snouts which adorned the likes of the 328 and 3.0 CSi. There’s a chance a study such as the Four tests the waters with consumers as to just how large that kidney grille can get. ENGINES BMW is playing its cards close to its chest when it comes to technical specifications but we can expect the 4 Series engine line-up to largely mirror that of the new 3 Series. Perhaps there’ll be less focus on the four-cylinder…
