putting the boot in

WHEN a yacht builder takes a new build to the Boot Dusseldorf boat show, they have a good reason to call it a ‘world premiere’. Boot Dusseldorf calls itself the world’s largest boat show and I am certain that there is no other boat show that could dare to disagree. Open for nine days within 17 exhibition halls across a massive showground park, I have not as yet received the attendance numbers of this year’s show but there is no reason to consider it is any different to previous years: around 250,000. If you were a boat builder why would you not be involved in getting your new range into the middle of Germany and in front of so many potential buyers? For a wide-eyed journalist from a small region in the global…

sunsail phi phi islands with eco-minded cruisers

FOR a limited number of people Sunsail are combining a magical holiday to a stunning place with a beach cleaning escapade with Ocean Crusaders. In September, cruisers can join the Ocean Crusaders team, along with the Sunsail Thailand team and many other like-minded eco-warriors in exploring the glorious Phi Phi Islands. The mission is to sail to a stunning beach, spend an hour or so cleaning it and then spend the day enjoying it. Lay around on the beach, swim off the boat or go for a snorkel and see the wondrous creatures you are protecting. Sailing experience is not required with Sunsail as you can book a boat or a cabin and get a skipper. The tour will be led by the Ocean Crusaders and Sunsail teams so there are two…

a cautionary tale

THIS article first appeared in Marine and Safety Tasmania Boatwise magazine. Early in 2019 on a sunny morning in Kettering, Tasmania, Anne from Peace of Mind Boat Services, was getting ready to go fishing on her 120 year old wooden boat Brittania, when she thought she would check a friend's boat on the way. After inspecting the lines because the tide was unusually low, she went to jump on board and as she did the ring on her little finger got caught on the canvas cover trim on the cabin top and 'de-gloved' her finger. She fainted and fell off the jetty and when her husband found her she was floating face down in the water. Following concussion, two surgeries, the use of leeches to clean the wound, removal of the nail and…
