PARROT HYDROFOIL Parrot’s latest mini drone doesn’t just fly, it morphs into a boat-copter hydrofoil. True to the Parrot brand, this mini drone is all about fun. Snap the palm sizes quad copter into its sleek awesome looking plastic hydrofoil hull and it provides your power and steering. You’re not going to want to take it out to the beach as a wave will trash it unless there’s no swell, but in a pool or any flat water this little transformer drone is a lot of fun. WHAT IS A FLIGHT CONTROLLER? It’s no mean feat keeping a multirotor in the air. The fundamental design of a multirotor aircraft (AC) means it is not capable of flight without some serious smarts. Just to maintain a hover requires motor speeds to be refreshed hundreds of times a second, taking into account live data from sensors including gyros and accelerometers. Enter the Flight Controller or FC. Sometimes called the Autopilot, it’s completely capable of flying the drone all by itself. The FC maintains basic flight and stability control so that the pilot can focus on which direction and altitude the drone is required to fly. The FC autonomously manages multiple tasks and systems, but what is important to learn about here are the core GAIN settings that affect AC responsiveness and performance. WHY…

CC3D The CC3D is my favourite. One of the greatest success stories is OpenPilot. This is an open source community, dedicated to the perfecting of the actual flight algorithms. This is by far the easiest to set up with the best back end and uses a software wizard to configure the board. Features include pre-configured profiles, multiple flight modes and settings that allow for self-leveLling or complete manual input modes (Rate Mode), which is my preferred.
