sustainable design winner

CASE Construction Equipment, a brand of CNH Industrial NV, received the award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. The methane-powered wheel loader, first unveiled in April 2019 in Germany at BAUMA, the world’s largest construction trade fair, was chosen for its vision of the future of construction as a sustainable, connected and technologically advanced industry. The CASE concept uses an FPT Industrial methane engine that has been specifically developed for construction applications and delivers maximum power of 230hp (172kW) – identical to the equivalent diesel power plant. This is achieved with a 50 per cent reduction in drive-by noise levels, which makes it ideal for municipal applications and when working in close proximity to offices, residential areas and…

underground tech

Pybar has taken a step closer to advanced underground automation at the Dargues Gold Mine in New South Wales with the arrival of a second new Cat R1700 underground loader at the Diversified Minerals site. The new loader visited the Pybar head office in Orange en-route to the mine site where it was met by executives and senior management from Pybar and WesTrac. The first of two new R1700s purchased for Dargues from WesTrac was commissioned at the mine during August 2019. The new machines are equipped with Caterpillar’s next generation Command for underground technology, giving them automation capabilities that will allow them to be driven via tele-remote from the surface from early-2020. Command is part of the Cat Minestar integrated suite of offerings designed specifically for mining. “With the second loader now on site…

Kuantan Port, a multi-cargo seaport along the east coast of Western Malaysia, facing the South China Sea, serves as a gateway to China and a transit hub for minor ports in the region. Five Volvo EC200D excavators are being used by the facilities management company Malaysia Coal Integrated Engineering Services (MCIE), working onboard bulk coal ships in the port. The excavators are equipped with two specially designed hanging hooks and the port cranes use the hooks to lift the machines onboard the ships. Inside the ship bunker, the excavators stack coal and iron ore and reload the material to a conveyor for further transport out from the ship to a stock collection point on land. David Hoon, director of MCIE, is very pleased with the Volvo machines. “The EC200D excavators are very powerful and…

pulling together

The unprecedented bushfires in New South Wales and Victoria have dominated the news headlines, devastated lives and livelihoods this summer. Few are in as good a position to help in the restoration and future protection of these burnt out areas as are Australia’s earthmoving fleet owners and suppliers; as dozers and excavators are in high demand right along the east coast south of Sydney. Makin Traks owner Daz Scale explains that he offered his fleet of Cat D3-D5 bulldozers to anyone in need in bushfire zones for urgent repair and fire clean up and prevention work, both on an on-hire basis and as outright purchases. “We’ve been supplying NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service with bulldozers and attachments for a long time now as a preferred supplier,” Scale explains. “We delivered a dozer down there…

assisted strength

German medical technology company Ottobock’s Paexo Shoulder exoskeleton is designed to provide strength and protection for the upper body and has just launched in the Australian market. The Paexo Shoulder is a passive exoskeleton which does not need an energy supply. Workers wear the exoskeleton close to their body, similar to a backpack. It provides mechanical support for individual body segments in certain postures and movements through the interplay of springs or elastic bands. The exoskeleton was designed to relieve muscular stress for workers who specifically spend long periods of time working with their arms raised. When people wearing the Paexo Shoulder raise their arms, pads around the biceps transfer weight to the hips thanks to mechanical cable pull technology. It provides noticeable relief for the muscles and joints in the shoulder region,…

Melbourne-based CivilworX Constructions took delivery of its first Hidromek HMK102B Supra Backhoe Loader in September last year. “CivilworX opted for the Hidromek Backhoe Loader due to the outstanding value proposition and uncompromising build quality, safety and performance,” says Joe Noonan, territory manager at Onetrak. Luke, the machine’s new operator says that he loves it. “It’s actually a lot better than the previous machine I was operating,” he adds. “It’s easy to jump in a Hidromek even if you haven’t operated one before. The controls are on the armrest and all the switches are on the centre of the dashboard, so everything is right in front of you – easy to reach.” Luke says that the Hidromek is a lot smoother to operate and the fuel economy is better than other machines that he’s operated. The…
