Back-to-school blues for South Africa's children
I recently spoke to a cashier about the expense of raising children in South Africa. During the course of our conversation, she mentioned to me that she has two young children: one is nine years old, and the other is 11. She revealed that her children didn't go to school in 2022, because the school they were placed in by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) was too far away from where they lived and, because of the distance, she didn't have the means to get them there every day.
