the enchantment of the kruger

Isn’t it wonderful to be able to travel again? (I just hope the president won’t gather us together again on a Sunday night for a “go wait for me in the bathroom” speech in the time between me typing these words and you reading them.) Getting into our car with my family to hit the road was the one thing I looked forward to the most since March while trapped mainly between the four walls of our house. As soon as the school holidays arrive, we’re joining a group of friends and doing the West Coast route between Hondeklip Bay and Koekenaap – the one my colleague Cyril reported on just a year ago in Drive & Camp # 27. You can feel the excitement in our home. I must…

winning letter

Ken wins a cooler bag worth R220. Whether you’re a camper, fisherman, or sports fan next to a cricket pitch; this cooler bag has room for luch box and a1,5 ℓ cool drink bottle. The lid also has space for a coffee flask. The interior is lined with PVC, which makes it easy to keep this bag clean and hygenic. The bag has a short strap that reaches over the top and attaches with a Velcro strip, and also a longer shoulder strap if you’re going to carry it over longer distances. It’s an ideal picnic accessory or a padkos bag for a road trip. winkel.weg.co.za…

Crossing two continents to get to the ZA sticker My wife, Lorraine, and I are currently on a self-drive tour from Scotland on our way through Africa. When we arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, we bought your July issue that had the magnetic ZA sticker. Now, your sticker has found its place on our UK-registered Toyota Hilux, between the mandatory ‘GB’ sticker and our Scottish one that says ‘Ecosse’. ( ‘Ecosse’ is French for Scotland. – Ed) We’re still on our way to Cape Town, but have been in Kenya since 3 March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We began our journey on 13 June last year and have already travelled through 27 countries. Most of them so far – 23 in total – have been in Europe. We even made a detour to the famous…

‘we camp because it’s great’

My wife Andriëtte and I love camping. People often ask us why we like it so much. Here are some reasons – and these are also some of the prerequisites for where and how we camp. We believe you should keep things simple. We make do with the minimum. I pack according to a list I compiled – and stick to it. It helps to not take along unnecessary items. Instead of camping in a caravan or off-road trailer, we prefer a dome tent or our rooftop tent. It’s a cheaper option and that way I save interest on my capital. Not that caravans bother me – all of us enjoy camping, after all. We like making friends in the campsite. It’s one of the first things we do at a new…

kruger magic

Monkey tricks “I took this photo at Skukuza where this vervet female was watching visitors closely – she was probably hoping for some leftovers. The little one had been drinking from her for a while, but fell asleep in her arms.” You can’t help but smile when you see this photo. Even though the mother takes up by far the largest section of the pic, you can’t miss the peaceful face of the little one. Even if you look at the mother’s face first, your eye is drawn to the little one, which makes it the focal point. Also, the adult monkey looks away from the young one, outside the photo border, and that also spontaneously draws your eye to the little one. Other than identifying with that little monkey’s serenity, there’s another…

send us your pictures

and we might publish them here. We’re not looking for traditional ‘prize winners’, just regular pics. Think of the type of pic you’d use as your Facebook cover photo; or something charming, such as kids warming their hands over a campfire. Whether the pic was taken with an expensive DSLR camera or a cellphone, if it’s good enough for your photo album it’s good enough for us. Johan Marais wins a Drive & Camp camera bag worth R650 – congratulations! Send your photos and contact details to leon.botha@media24.com…
