letter from the editor

WHEN REALITY GETS REAL Are you feeling binary right now? – because there’s a lot of it about. And how are those Bitcoin payments coming along? Didn’t think so, tech can be so tetchy sometimes. The other day while working at 2.1km/h on my office treadmill desk, I strapped a chunky plastic goggle mask to my face and held on. My vision went all Hlaudi. ‘What is it? I asked the tetchy tech guy. ‘Virtual reality,’ he said, ‘it will bowl you over.’ It did – in an unintended way, but I turned off the moving part of my desk before any further damage was done. ‘You mean VR’s not a seamless offering of slick gadgetry like all the other silver phoney things that have made our lives so amazing?’ I…

A GENTLEMAN LIVES BY a few simple truths and rules (the ones that top our list are on p78). And if you’ve been reading these pages, you’ll know that looking dapper has far more to do with how you wear your suit, than which suit you choose. To become a man of style, you must first learn the basics: i.e. how to iron a shirt. Follow these steps by our good friends at shirtmaker TM Lewin to get the job done in just three minutes. KIT • A wide mesh-based ironing board • A steam iron • A water sprayer • Starch (if you like your shirts more formal) 1. PREP Use the water sprayer to damp down your shirt to soften the cloth fibres. 2. CUFF AND SLEEVE Press down on the heel of the iron rather than…

shashi naidoo

Shashi Naidoo didn’t imagine that she would end up in the limelight. Nor did she imagine that delivering owers would be such a fruitful part-time job. ‘It was actually by chance that I was delivering owers to an advertising agency,’ Shashi tells us. ‘To my surprise, they thought I was there to audition. I said no, but they insisted I cast. I booked the job and the rest, as they say, is history.’ The model has since appeared in a number of print and TV ads, including for Sun International (opposite Charlize Theron) and SA Tourism. She’s the face of Dermalogica and luxury bag brand Tumi, and has had her fair share of acting gigs – you may have seen her on Backstage, Generations or Egoli. She also graced our screens…

sideline style

South African sport has suffered its fair share of setbacks in the recent past with Cricket World Cup exits so painful they belong in a Spanish Inquisition museum, rugby losses so laboured they better suit a maternity ward and a soccer team so far down the FIFA rankings that a telescope, a pair of tweezers and a pound of pepper may pop it up long enough for a quick peek. But one local sports icon is bringing back the class. Ajax Cape Town soccer coach and former African Cup of Nations winner Roger de Sá has been named one of the best dressed soccer coaches by the fashion blog Most Stylish. Luminaries such as Zinedine Zidane, Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone stride the pitches of European glory in all their Gaelic and…
