editor’s letter

Years ago, when I was the editor in chief of British Marie Claire, then Hearst CEO and now Executive Vice Chairman Frank Bennack heard that I was planning to leave the magazine. No sooner had he gotten the word than he booked me on a flight to New York to talk about a job with Hearst in America (giving up his holiday vacation in the process, mind you). I always laugh when I remember how, due to the secrecy of the encounter, we had to meet in a hotel suite and kept changing rooms to avoid being discovered—goodness knows what the housekeepers thought! At the time I may not have been so sure about New York, but I soon became certain that I wanted to work for Frank. During his illustrious, decades-long…

When labeling a pair of boots as “amazing,” certain requirements must be met: flattering shape, seasonless color, and unique details. Our custom-created exclusive Hero from emerging designer Daniella Shevel is worthy of that label. The sleek silhouette accentuates the natural lines of the foot, the classic camel shade is timeless and versatile, and the extra-long laces can be tied around the ankles for that extra flair. FASHION SURREAL LIFE “Between minimalism and exuberance” is how Nodaleto cofounder Julia Toledano, daughter of LVMH chairman and CEO Sidney Toledano, describes her debut line of go-go boots and platform Mary Janes that pays homage to Guy Bourdin’s provocative 1970s photographs. BOOKS FEMININE MYSTIQUE “WHY HAVE THERE BEEN No Great Women Artists?” asked a landmark 1971 essay, effectively birthing the feminist art history movement with its rallying cry to reconsider the canon. Now, Great Women Artists (Phaidon) offers a cheeky response through the stories of more than 400 artists. Spanning 500 years, this epic survey features once obscure figures like Artemisia Gentileschi, who was excluded from written accounts for centuries, as well as contemporary masters like Cindy Sherman and Marilyn Minter. Also this month, photographers Ken Browar and Deborah Ory’s The Style of…

look better naked

WANT TO FEEL your best in the buff? Don’t stress so much about size: It’s really about looking firmer and smoother—basically, in shape. Here, the most efficient ways to get there. HIGH-TECH CHEATS “In the past five years, there’s been a boon in what we can do for the body,” says Paul Jarrod Frank, M.D., a New York dermatologist. He says that half of his days are now spent on procedures designed for below the neck. What do patients want? “Above all, tighter, more toned skin.” For example, Emtone: Newly cleared by the FDA for the treatment of cellulite and loss of skin tone, it uses thermal radio frequency to tighten skin by stimulating collagen, while mechanical shock wave therapy breaks up fibrous bands, smoothing out a rippled surface. Emtone is performed in…
