After Dave Conwill wrapped up his driveReport on the 1940 La Salle for this issue, we couldn’t help thinking there ought to be some action photography to go with it. The inspiration came from the ready willingness of its owner, Gene Coe, and his son-in-law, Kevin Flicker (our driver), to bring the car out at a moment’s notice, and even to drive it up to meet us in Bennington from his location down in Western Massachusetts, about a half hour away. And so, this month’s cover is an action shot of that grand sedan rolling down the road on a beautiful day among the Green Mountains here in Vermont. The La Salle never complained a bit, even while we let it idle to review our shots between passes down the highway.…

Pup Train OFF AND ON, WE’VE FEATURED AUTOMOBILES BUILT TO LOOK LIKE LOCOMOTIVES. Mostly off lately, since many of our readers pointed out the prevalence of such vehicles in relation to the American Legion’s Forty and Eight programs. This one, though, is a little bit different. We came across it in the Columbus, Ohio, Metropolitan Library’s digital collections, and the brief description shows that it was part of the “Manufacturers and Wholesalers Association Pup Train goodwill tour.” Exactly what that means, we have no idea. “Pup train” seems to be the term for multiple trailers towed behind a truck, but why the Manufacturers and Wholesalers Association conducted this goodwill tour, where it went (not very far, we assume), and what they used as the basis for the locomotive (something street legal, judging…

CAR 1947 Lincoln Continental Convertible AUCTIONEER RM Sotheby’s LOCATION Auburn, Indiana DATE September 5, 2020 LOT NUMBER 4019 RESERVE None AVERAGE SELLING PRICE $38,000 SELLING PRICE $20,350 LINCOLN MADE MINOR STYLE CHANGES TO the Continental for the 1947 model year, with the most notable being the addition of “Lincoln” script on both sides of the hood. The similarity of Continentals from 1946-’48 make restoring these cars easier in regard to finding parts and equipment. This Continental was one of only 738 made for 1947 and it was equipped with the 292 Flathead V-12 engine mated to a three-speed transmission. It featured power windows and dual side mirrors, as well as a continental kit. The last restoration was an older one, so it needed some work, but the Full Classic was last used in parades and demonstrations. Rare yet obtainable, this…

RM Sotheby’s has a Big Labor Day Weekend RM SOTHEBY’S AUBURN, INDIANA, AUCTION HAULED IN MORE THAN $16.8 million over Labor Day weekend, with an impressive 85.44-percent sell-through rate. The event coincided with the (canceled for 2020) Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival and marked the auction house’s return to in-person attendance in the wake of shutdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fittingly, the top two sales were a 1935 Auburn Eight Supercharged Speedster and a 1936 Duesenberg Model J Tourster. The Auburn was described as a well-known genuine, original, and correct 1935. It still had its factory firewall data plate, and the engine retained its data plate and stamping, as well as the original supercharged carburetor, air filter, and sump. When the bidding ended, the Auburn found a new home for $770,000. The…
