it’s all in the detail

Tip Before painting on tiles, remember to prepare the surface by removing any oily residue with sugar soap. When dry, apply two thin coats of Plascon Tile & Melamine Primer (you might need to sand lightly between coats) before adding colour like Caroline did. She painted the landscape freehand; you might prefer to draw the outline with a light pencil first. The mountains, valleys and ocean remind us of all the wonderful views we’ve enjoyed on our travels. So we brought the mountains home!– Caroline A stunning landscape Caroline Jacobs and her sons Kyle and Cameron refer to their kitchen as their “all-in-one happy place”. This is where they spend quality time together and cook comfort food. But it wasn’t always the welcoming space it is now. Caroline describes the original kitchen as “a…

more space, more light

Architects and first-time property buyers Leon Bekker and Sarah Kuiper bought their spacious Parkview apartment in August 2017. “We wanted an apartment rather than a house as we like the practicality, low maintenance and sense of community that comes with living in a complex,” Leon says. They fell in love with the old apartment’s spacious rooms and timber elements, such as the door frames and parquet floors. “You don’t see much of this in new developments and we love the warmth of these wooden touches,” Leon says. But the kitchen, which the front door opens up into, had dated fittings and insufficient counter space, and it was separated from the adjacent living room by a veneered timber panel structure. “It just wasn’t conducive to modern living,” Leon says. “Having people over always…

from built-in to mobile

Silvia Miles’s company Milestone Kitchens is synonymous with freestanding kitchen units. Back in 1994 when her family erected a barn over an old shack in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and built a house around the structure, the kitchen featured built-in concrete shelving with raw wood. Over the years, the house has undergone a few major developments. In 2017, it was time for the built-in units to make way for a freestanding kitchen, in line with the ethos of Silvia’s business. The concrete units were removed along with the stone countertops, shelves, baskets and floor tiles. The kitchen was then fitted with Milestone Kitchens’ Swedish Style freestanding units in the colour White. A combination of legs and castors was used for the supports, while the tops were made from ashwood. “What I love most about…

a neutral beauty!

When Nelia de Wet bought her house in Somerset West in 2004, it was everything she hoped for: this grande dame had oodles of character – something money can’t buy. In addition, an outbuilding on the property provided the ideal location for her workshop and shop, Gister – a well-known vintage furniture and décor store. However, an 80-year-old home often comes with a few challenges, such as dark and poky rooms. Over time, interior walls were knocked down, a veranda was added and the children’s en-suite bedrooms were moved upstairs, giving the then teens the privacy they needed. Today, the all white Oregon pine and cement flooring in the house is the foundation for Nelia’s gorgeous French décor. This three-bedroom, three-bathroom home is a reflection of her creativity – from the…
