ALASDAIR CAMERON Garden designer Ever since he was a boy, Alasdair Cameron has loved being in the garden. Aged 18, he embarked on an interior-design course with a strong focus on garden design. He set up on his own in 1992 and has worked on a wide variety of projects since then, including his own Devon garden (on pages 258-265). His favourite part of this project was being able to ‘harmonise the house with the landscaping – our garden was a blank canvas, so we could settle the house naturally within it’. Which plant is currently your favourite? ‘Crataegus, which blossoms in spring and bears berries in autumn. International design talents tend to settle in Milan, Paris or London, but Californian-born Ini Archibong lives in Neuchâtel, a Swiss lakeside town surrounded by mountain scenery. Perhaps this partly explains his spiritual outlook, and the ethereal and organic forms he creates. Not that the designer has seen much of his home lately. ‘I’ve been travelling weekly for the past year between Paris, New York, LA, Slovenia and Milan,’ he says over the phone, while in transit. The rising star acknowledges that this is the price of his current success, which has been remarkably swift. 12 THE INVISIBLE COLLECTION, LONDON Having launched in 2016 with a series of glamorous, highly Instagrammable popups in Paris, Miami, Milan and London, The Invisible Collection is as sophisticated as the duo behind it. Anna Zaoui and Isabelle Dubern, design lovers who divide their time between Paris, London and New York, established the company as an online shop. It sells contemporary furniture, lighting and accessories that had previously been unobtainable, as they had been originally created by interior designers and architects exclusively for projects ranging from hotels and restaurants to private houses. The idea has struck a chord. The Invisible Collection now represents 50 designers – mostly of French origin – who follow in the decorative arts tradition, such as Pierre Yovanovitch, Vincent Darré and Marc Ange. 15 ‘ExCinere’ by Formafantasma for Dzek Five years ago the architectural materials developer Dzek launched the now iconic Marmoreal – an ‘engineered marble’ made in collaboration with designer Max Lamb. Dzek’s founder Brent Dzekciorius (pictured right) is a design curator who has previously worked for Moss Gallery in New York and Phillips in London. His company’s latest innovation is ‘ExCinere’, created with the Amsterdam-based studio Formafantasma. The result of three years of experimentation, this collection teams porcelain tiles with glazes made from volcanic ash from Mount Etna – a material Formafantasma has been working with for a long time. There is a distinct Seventies feel to the tiles, which are available in two rectangular sizes and a colour palette of hazy yellows and browns. The shades are determined by the amount…

A quiet hero of the British design scene, Sheridan Coakley – the engaging founder of the London furniture emporium SCP – has helped launch the careers of Jasper Morrison, Matthew Hilton, Konstantin Grcic and many others. ‘I’ve never had a plan,’ he says with characteristic modesty. ‘Have I been a champion of young designers? I suppose so, but not out of the goodness of my heart – we’ve all benefitted.’ Since 1985, SCP has evolved from selling reproductions of Thirties tubular steel furniture to become a much loved and highly respected institution, designing, manufacturing and selling 20th-century and contemporary design.
